  15. So, amidst everything else flooding the zone, I missed this report earlier in the week.

The Star Trek Section 31 movie broke the Nielsen top ten streaming movie chart for the week of January 20-26, 2025.

Despite the brigading, despite the dire predictions and fan complaints, it performed well enough in its first week - especially keeping in mind that Paramount+ has a smaller subscription base.

As my partner and I seem to be among the few willing to say we found it a lot of fun, even better on rewatch, I’m glad to see that it has other unvoiced supporters.

    TrekMovie has the report.

  25. It’s a shame SECTION 31 ended up the way it did. There’s a lot of potential in a miniseries that explores the tension between the concept of Section 31 and the ideals of the Federation. And Trek already has plenty of action so could use a slow burn spy thriller instead of a suicide-squad-but-make-it-trek. The format change definitely didn’t help, either. It’s obviously several episodes smashed into 90 minutes. #StarTrek #S31

  30. CW: Star Trek Section 31 on-the-fly thoughts and review

    Okay, let’s do this.

The Terran Empire selects a new emperor through the Hunger Games?

In the (very cheesy) S31 mission briefing, if the Federation is forbidden from crossing that border, how come Starbase 11 was on the non-Federation side?

Is the nightclub singer an homage to one of the aliens seen in the Kelvinverse?

I like the blending between the black and white halves of the (TOS alien).

Okay, the Nanokin in an Irish Vulcan “robot” is…interesting. For a Lost Era setting, between TOS and TNG, that Vulcan robo-body is remarkably advanced.

I have so many questions about the phase pods. Gotta keep watching, though.

Well, the Deltan falling out of her dress didn’t last long.

Kinda digging the Emperor’s holographic dragon dress.

So the Emperor was too evil for even the Terran empire?

Okay, the tie to the Eugenics wars is kind of interesting. All we hear about is usually Khan, but we know there were others he fought against. Guess we just leaned the name of one of them.

How does this Godsend weapon jump from planet to planet?

That ship bears absolutely no resemblance to any so-far known design language that would make sense for this era.

Ship goes boom, so that doesn’t matter anymore.

    Of course there’s a mole.

They’re looking for Zeph; I’m leaning toward him _not_ being the mole, because it’s too obvious.

Yup. Dead Zeph. He was pretty much just annoying anyway and his mech suit never really did much of anything to be useful, so no big loss.

Georgiou calling Garrett a “chaos goblin” was amusing.

Oh, obviously someone else was driving Zeph’s suit. Y’all are so slow on the uptake.

And now we get a cross between the Death Star trench run and the Temple of Doom mine car sequence. Except the flashing lights and quick cuts make it really hard to track the action.

Nice save by the chameloid, though; that was nifty.

Oh, she poisoned her family with Iocane powder!

Why is it always a mega-destructive, world destroying threat? Not every plot has to be about the End Of Everything.

Why would a garbage scow have enough shields to stand up against a photon torpedo?

The Godsend can be activated with a strong jostle?

I am amused by Garrett digging through the trash to improvise a weapon.

Why would a garbage scow have a self-destruct protocol?

Big boom? Fakeout, of course. Now explain it.

That was a shitty explanation. And so did Georgiou just wipe out a significant portion of the mirror universe with the Godsend?

Mrs. Fuzz? And a Southern accent as over the top as the Irish one was? Oh dear.

Oh my god. Jamie Lee Curtis is Control? I thought I recognized the voice in the opening briefing, but didn’t make the connection.

And that’s it. Well, that was definitely a movie. Strip out the Trek references and call it “Generic Space Spies”, and it would be an entirely acceptable and inoffensive, if not particularly groundbreaking, direct-to-video movie. As a Trek film…well, it’s a generic space spy movie with Trek references. Doesn’t break anything, but doesn’t really add anything to the franchise, either. Michelle Yeoh is always fun, the cast does acceptable jobs, and it’d play in the background during a “Trek movie marathon while I clean the house” session just fine.

  34. The official region-free Star Trek Section 31 trailer and poster are out. This trailer looking much more polished (unsurprisingly) than the teaser released previously.

Georgiou’s space station looks marvellous! Not at all in the classic Starfleet mushroom style. Original, not just another ring or cylinder. Like the DS9 design, something to give station model lovers something to dream of adding to their collections for the next few decades.

@virtualbri assuming you and your team were on this project too. It looks incredible! Sets a high bar for Star Trek streaming original movies.

I’m enthusiastic that the teaser directly takes on Emperor Georgiou’s atrocities — this is an origin story and a redemption one.

It makes sense to have the movie, which originally would have been the pilot episode for the show, provide a fresh entry point to both Mirror Georgiou and the Star Trek franchise.

It also gives Michelle Yeoh a very different multiverse principal character than she played in EEAAO. Still think a longer limited series or spinoff show is in the realm of possibility.
