  1. Long term goal in hacking the Teletek #S100 hardware is getting the front panel speaker to make noise.

    According to this:
    ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm741.pd

The 741 op-amp to drive the speaker can be run directly off the unregulated ± 18V that the S100 bus provides!

I wish the wire wrapped mess that is the front panel controller at least matched the schematics for it, but it doesn't.

It's a latched buffer, then (???) to 741 to speaker. Wire up the 741 right, then I can figure out what (???) is?

  2. Ok so a standard circuit board is 1.57 mm or 0.062 inch thick, and a S100 circuit board is 5 inch x 10 inch.

So I've ordered some 8" x 12" plastic sheets that are 1.5 mm thick, and a pair of 80mm 12v fans to build a fan card to help cool my S100 CP/M box!

  3. I still cannot understand why the #S100 bus based computers were not a great success in the early 1980s.

It was used for the first hobbyist #Altair computers as well as #Z80 CPU based systems.

The extensibility through standardized components was one of the key features. There were backplanes, cases and exchangeable 3rd party components available.

But people preferred proprietary stuff like #Apple II and #Commodore pet and later #VC20 and #C64.

Shown here, a software engineer at Roklan spends his evening doing a build and test of GORF for the Intellivision, to be sold by CBS Electronics.

  6. Hello all, I'm from the #FujiNet project, #ESP32 based, which aims to put a WiFi network adapter on every #retrocomputing and #retrogaming platform.

With this device, we can not only stream software to our favorite vintage computing devices, but we can also engage in cross platform gaming and other software.

We are trying to maximize our reach by working through a generic 8-bit parallel bus protocol that could be used on anything with a card edge; to use an #RP2040 as a bus front-end. This way, we could reach #TRS80 #IBMPC #NES #SMS #Intellivision #Atari2600 #MSX #S100 #PC88 #PC98 #Astrocade and so much more.

  9. Today we've done a lot of measury at the #Kneisner #M100. With the working riser board it was really a pleasure to do. One of the first things which is unnormal - Pin 52 of the #S100 bus should have -18V and has, are you sitting, +4V. One thing to take a look at next weekend. And we have done a few measurements at the RAM expansion card, somethings goes wrong with BD1 column data bit.

  10. That is how the #S100 #RiserBoard is looking in prepared. I'm missing the 74LS123 and the heat sink for the 7805, the rest is fine for today evening.

  11. On my special demand my favourite seller has produced a small batch of #S100 #RiserCard's. I've to wait for some parts to produce one for our #IMSAI8080 clone. Maybe someone needs it too, available at the bay. John Monahan from s100computers.com has designed this with some goodies and automatic fused.

  12. The Exidy Sorcerer computer had an optional expansion chassis for using S-100 cards.

I have a Sorcerer but I've never even seen the expansion chassis. Today I picked up two chassis worth of backplanes minus the case and power supply! Does either work? That's a great question...

  13. This is an amazing video that walks through the build and test cycle for making games on an Atari 2600 using an S100 system with a rom emulation adapter.

  14. @retrocomputing This video shows the process of doing #gamedev using other, larger systems to develop software for the #Atari 2600 and 5200 game consoles using a cross assembler. This example contrasts a cross assembler from Sorcim running on #Atari8bit and #S100 hardware. Enjoy. #retrocomputing #retrogaming youtu.be/59qT2HFWJRo

  16. An Odd Home Computer From the 1980s - If you were around when the Altair 8800 was king, you might remember the name Crom... - hackaday.com/2023/08/18/an-odd #retrocomputing #cromemco #cp/m #s100

  17. I finally got around to ordering an #Agon Light. I don't have a 'dedicated' CP/M machine (although I could put CP/M 86 on the #PCXT 5160 or <shudders> run it on the #Commodore128). If I had more time / space / money / gumption, I'd love to play around with an #s100 system. The first computer I ever wrote software on was an S100 system running TurboDOS. Anyway, the YouTube videos make the Agon look like a clever little device, and it's pretty cheap.
