  1. I do agree though that we need to divide server functions between account servers and app servers.

    "... your server determines your functionality. So if you're on Mastodon, like most people in the fediverse are, you can't write long form blog posts and federate them. You can't do link aggregation, Reddit-style, like Lemmy or KBin. You can't use a YouTube-style video posting interface. These all exist on the fediverse, but not in Mastodon."

    Well ... not really. It solves the problem by getting rid of independent servers. Replacing them with portable account islands ("PDS"), that are totally dependent on a connection with a Titter-scale platform ("Relay" + "AppView") to do anything.
