The #European #bison #Bos #bonasus, prefers forests with open areas and was originally widespread throughout Central, Western, and Southern #Europe. #Herds consist of about 15 animals, with sexually mature males only seeking company during the #rutting season.The last originally #wildbison was #shot in 1927. Today's all descend from 12 captive individuals. Now, nine bisons were #released in the #Iberianhighlands to study how bisons can #restore #ecosystems.

To be a stag in October
We went to Killarney National Park this morning to photograph the annual rutting. This is when stags come down from the mountain and look for romance and court any nearby female deer. And they’re quite vocal about it.
