Qualche giorno fa il presidente del Kenya William Ruto ha ordinato alla polizia di sparare alle gambe dei manifestanti che attaccano le attività commerciali, per metterli fuori combattimento “senza ucciderli”. Le Nazioni Unite e i gruppi per i diritti umani hanno accusato la polizia di aver fatto un uso spropositato della forza durante la recente ondata di proteste anti-governative. Si calcola che la repressione sia costata finora la vita di 31 persone. “Chiunque venga sorpreso a bruciare un’attività o una proprietà altrui dovrebbe essere colpito da un proiettile alla gamba, ricoverato in ospedale e poi portato in tribunale. Non uccideteli, ma assicuratevi che abbiano le gambe rotte”, ha detto il presidente, che ha ammonito i suoi rivali politici a non sponsorizzare e a non utilizzare “manifestazioni violente e mezzi illegali” per rimuoverlo dal potere. Oltre ai 31 morti, più di 100 persone sono state ferite e circa 532 arrestate durante le manifestazioni che hanno colpito la capitale Nairobi e altre grandi città, secondo la Commissione nazionale per i diritti umani del Kenya (KNCHR).
