I was a #RussellGroup #fixedterm #Researcher and I loved it. It made best use of my #skills but there's no guarantee of the next #contract. Even if likely you'll get another you can'tbe sure. Approaching 60 I realised that the risk was high as a different #job would be hard to get. #Ageism is rife in #employment. So, I took a permanent lower #pay role for #financial #security. I miss #research every day.

The latest data from the #SuttonTrust suggest that 'widening participation' at the top #universities has almost no impact over the last 25 years... provided you equate 'top' universities with the #RussellGroup which is not a perfect fit.
It would be better to use the THES ranking to identify top universities as some of the top 20, not in the RG are actually do a pretty god job - my own erstwhile institution, Lancaster U, for instance does pretty well on this & is top 10 but not in the RG!
