We are cleaning the garage for the, brace for it, ARRIVAL OF INTERNET CABLE on the 27th. As my son says, best Christmas present EVER.
Cell phone modems in 2025: it sure has been a drag…

Well, evidently the internet has decided that I shouldn’t look at pictures today. Not even for news stories. Bah
This level of shoddiness is an order of magnitude and then some
Average speed (for Verizon): 95
Our speed: 4

For those living beyond the fiber optic frontier, CNET's released their list of best rural internet providers for 2025. Because 'high-speed' shouldn't be a myth, even if you're out in the boonies.

We use LibreOffice for everything except final submission around here! Not only is it free, but LibreOffice is HAPPY to default to storage in the folder you tell it instead of stealing all your data and putting it in the cloud
We're on rural internet; cloud-based files aren't always accessible. When I turn on my machine, I want access to the things I've written! Apparently, this is considered radical thinking in 2025!

Can you see my thoughts, beamed to you via LTE, after travelling by wifi from my chair to router, then 100 metres via network cable to this post stuck in the Oak Ridge Moraine?

At long last, the local utility installed the hardware for our home fiber internet this morning.
The speed test results as I post this: 939 Mbps down and 931 Mbps up.
This is absolutely amazing for us since we live where directions include "Turn off the paved road."

How do you feel about #satelliteinternet
I was camping in Wyoming last summer and was weirded out by what I later learned was a Starlink train of low-orbit satellites. It was spooky!

Casting a message out to the #Fediverse.
Has anyone tried to do any Work From Home scenarios using satellite internet services?
The county that I'm looking to move to only has broadband to parts of the county, and some of the more desirable locations (to me anyway) don't have it.
Also - Starlink isn't available there yet (according to their map).
Any input is welcome!
TIA
