  1. A silent witness to years of hard work. 🚜🌾 I’ve always been fascinated by the way nature slowly reclaims what we leave behind. The contrast between that deep, crusty rust and the vibrant green field was just too good to miss.

  2. Was a-farmin' on the shares, and always I was poor
My crops I lay into the banker's store
My wife took down and died upon the cabin floor
And I ain't got no home in this world anymore

  3. You ain’t gonna find nothin’ down here, friend
Except seeds blowin’ up the highway in the south wind

  4. Jesse Jackson could do something most politicians can't even imagine.

He got conservative dirt farmers and inner-city families fighting the same enemy: corporate profiteers running roughshod over us all.

That's not (just) oratory. That's vision. And it's exactly what we need right now.

  5. A transmission tower stands beside trees planted as windbreak near an Iowa farmhouse. Shot from I-80 in January 2021, the scene appears calm—ice, fence, gray sky—but everything here works: the tower collecting data, the trees blocking wind, even my passing camera recording. What looks like stillness is actually a landscape of hidden labor.

  6. The grave looks old but it is one of the younger things in the vicinity of Abó. Nearby, ruins of pueblos occupied by the Tanoans in the 11th Century mingle with ruins of pueblos and Spanish missions from the 15th and 17th Centuries.

  7. Stanton, Tennessee. Population 450. They built a massive Ford EV battery plant there expecting 6,000 jobs.

    Now Trump's killing EV incentives.

Small towns bet everything on the electric future. Washington just moved the goalposts. Again.

Rural America gets whiplash while politicians flip-flop on industrial policy.

  9. Medicaid Cuts Threaten Life-Saving Care for Rural Black Families

Experts worry a lack of access could lead to death and chronic illnesses, and worsen economic disparities.

  10. Musical Interlude: I heard these guys over the weekend, while at the Victorian Chautauqua in Mountain Lake Park, MD, in the heart of Garrett County, Maryland's westernmost part. It's marked by the bustling resort community of Deep Creek Lake, but outside that is rolling hills and farmland, and can be shockingly peaceful and quiet. This is a local musical duo, performing a song they wrote that's become the unofficial Garrett County anthem.

"Garrett County Time," performed live by Smith & Roberts.
