I somehow lost or gained a kilometer, depending on how you look at it. Route planned was 5km according to Suunto mapping, Because of so many dogs in the park I cut the route short, out through car park instead of around the lake in the park. Yet, I got home and watch is now saying I ran 6km ... I clearly must have done a wrong turn somewhere, oh well not important since recovery food was bangers and mash with homemade chocolate brownies for pudding ;)

Managed to get out there before the storm hit. I spend a few minutes trying to figure out how I could carry enough apples - how many apples is enough - for something we could cook in the HQ when I still had about 5km to go. As yummy cooking apples had fallen onto the path and I could easily reach others still on the tree. I decided to go and do some dressage with Paddy instead. He cleared the two fallen trees without much effort, let's just say my attempt wasn't so elegant ;)

Looks like I forgot to log yesterday's run with you, so a double write up today, aren't you lucky ;)

Yesterday was 5km on the dot and the first proper autumn run, where the wind had a wee bite to it and it took some time to warm up. It's really the time of the year where it's a lottery on your layers, will you warm up on route, will wind be too cold, sweat in the uphill, then be too brr in the shade, long sleeve or short, wind breaker etc.

Today's run was back to glorious perfect running weather, views, hills, trails through woodland, gorse and nettles. Is it just me or have you noticed it too, nettles has been vicious this year? I've run in Spain, France,. Germany, Denmark, Belgium and the yUK this year. And everywhere tall, big "forest" of nettles and their season is just months on end. I can't remember them being this bad.

My mum told me a story about being at a very posh dinner and the lady next to her asked her if she played Gaalff. It took my mum a few moments to figure out what she was asked. So now I can't say it in any other way ;)

I decided I needed some help, and put on Depeche Mode, instead of trying out this fella, before the upcoming hill. It's a steep wee bugger, some would call it a wall and that's includes me. The downhill on the other side was much easier, but these plastic sheets they use to stop trail corrosion, are lethal when exposed and wet. I was glad that I had a pulling Paddy, that I could use as an anchor to hold me upright a few times. Sorry, lad for yanking you lead, but I would have dropped hard if it wasn't for you.

Should have stuck to the 7km route, the last two was a bit hard. Not sure if it's because of lack of rest or food. Ignoring that eyelash I got in my eye for about 5km and just couldn't get it out, this was a brilliant run and a trail I would like to run again, with two fully working eyes ;)

Ee by gum that Yorkshire do scrub up nicely, eh lad. Sadly because of the need to earn a keep, I couldn't do a longer run today in Dogs own country.

Nearly had a dramatic fall, jumped over some nettles, from where a startled black rabbit took of from at speed, Paddy darted after the wild life, hit me as I landed, we just about managed to stay upright. Lucky he was running next to me at that moment, if he have had a step or two run up, I've been airborne.

Oops I took a wrong turn.

Set out to run 5-6km potentially nearly 7km if I felt like adding a bit extra and the rain stayed off. But ended up with 14km on a route that probably be the last time this year. As it is always rather boggy and even after the long dry spell here, the ground was rather heavy to run on. Wet peat and moss really do slow you down, all your spring just get soaked up in the bouncy ground. Also they are getting ready for the hunting season up there and when it is wet you can easy find knee deep bogs. Best time is after a long hard frost and a foot of snow, much easier to deal with.

But alas it was a grand day out, tapped the trig point, had a good natter in the rain with a hiker. Both in shorts and soaked to the bone but didn't care as we talked and watched the rain moving across the valley between us and Pendle Hill.

Well, nine of you lot believed in me, thanks, and I did it.

40+ stiles/gates, nettles, 10 bridges, uncountable amount of sheep, two herds of cows, 20 mini horses, 2 meal breaks, rain, sunshine, 676m up, 21.3 km (I had to do a double loop in the park to get the last 2km).

My longest run, jolly good time outside, perfect temperature, even when I was soaked.

Well, HQ going to get a new fridge fitted tomorrow. Cold food again at last \o/ So I was looking at the map and there's two options for the run back.

Same route as last week, 14km with 250m up, where there's hope I finally figure out where the correct stile is, so I don't have to climb over a stonewall "illegally" again.

Or a totally new route, it only shares about 3km with the other route, just under 20km with 450m up. And with the certain wrong turns and missed junction, I'm within a stones throw of the half marathon. The missing bit I can add in a park near the finishing line. It would nearly 5km over my previous longest run.

Perfect running temperatures too, though there's rain on the forecast, but at least I'll arrive were there is a warm shower, tea and cake!

Another bridge for @robchapman. if your eyes can see it, the middle part is about one and a half foot wide and the center is heavily worn out. Which makes this bridge "fun" to cross when it's wet and snowy and icy. Just learned that the bridge from the other day could be up to 6000 years old.

Managed to sneak in a run between loads on a admin day, washing, shopping etc. Glad to see that my old haunts have spend some money on some walks/trails work. I only went down one path because I knew it would be empty of people and dry. Normally this track is ankle deep mud and over growing in brambles and nettles. But now it's clear and hard packed gravel.

Quick and short run before work. Love the stone bridge, there's a few others over the wee beck. Along with fords but they tend to be very slippery, but they make easy watering of Paddy.

Shorter than I feared, but there were still detours. First one was because a farmer "forgot" to remake the stile, after the dry stone wall had fallen. Second one was cows in the field. Said fields was nearly impossible to traverse, because 9-10 months ago it was foot deep mud that the cow churned up, now after a long spell of no rain it was rock hard deep cow hoof print holes covered in grass. Every step was a test on my ankles, even Paddy the Irish mutt found these 2km hard work.

But all in all a grand day out, even if I managed to rip my running shorts on a bit of barbed wire. Good temps and the odd beck crossing had enough water in them to refill Paddy.

And the day was finished off with two recovery points at the local blues festival with a good friend.

Today's trail running tip: Get yourself some salami sticks. Not only are they tasty, salty and contains carbs and protein. In a nice easy eatable packaging that ain't too messy and don't drip sticky stuff, like other spots "food" do.

They also double as drumsticks for air drumming, which any trail runner worth their sweaty salt, will need while listening to wicked tunes, like when Lars drums his way through Metallica's banger of an album - Black Album, which was today's RAAAD.

Slow and short run after yesterday's heat and that we don't have a working fridge, so I'm not fed at my normal levels ;)

It's good to run with dogs, as you can use them as early warning system. Today I saw a big rock that normally would help people over a wet/muddy area. Thought that would be a good step to jump over the dip in the trail. Paddy must have been thinking the same, but had to change his footing darn quickly as the rock rocked hard. I managed to re-plan my steps in time, I would have rolled an ankle and dropped like a ....

This morning run was through a "machine" forest. The last time I walked through it, I couldn't enjoy the far view, only had a tunnel of trees and a line of sky directly above us.

I set out too hard, felt good but burned all my beans, so the last nearly kilometre was done walking.

Today's RAAAD was The Cure fantastic Mixed Up, some absolute bangers on that album and one of them was our wedding song ;)

Another lost in the overgrowth run, lucky we managed to find a marker within the bracken. See if you can spot Paddy and the sign post ;) Found a wonderful trail through a beech forest, an old quarry access road. Sadly it was only a kilometer long, but it was wonderful while it lasted.

This is why I enjoy of running in woodland. The random mix of farm/logging track to single track to a well used trail to "darn it" nettles and shoulder-ouch-high-arrgghh-my-new-top-ouch-brambles to a tunnel of wood.

Ghost walkers. Lass reported this same on her run last night. Since we got nervous/anxious dogs, we tend to keep a good eye on things around us. So we don't get suprise by a quite cyclists, or stuck in a pinch point with other walkers and tying to find more space or exit routes if we see other dogs. This is "the joy" of rescue dogs, you never know what/who/when some-thing/one scares them.

Which of course on today's run suprised me like the lass yesterday. Dead straight road, for nearly a kilometer, with a wee dip at the end. Not a soul, just me, the mutt and trees. No paths left or right, just two ends. I dip out of sight, see the first dip in the graph on the photo, pop back up and the road is full. 5 people out of nowhere, there on the path, ok the two at the far end I could understand. But the other 3, nope they couldn't have done that distance in the time I was out of sight, so where did they come from...
