Le réseau thématique 14 « Sociologie de l’art et de la culture » organise prochainement un temps d’échanges avec Arielle Nganso, autour de son ouvrage :
Au cours des années 1970, la rumba, le soukous et le makossa forment une « sono mondiale » dont la circulation entre les continents est lourde d’enjeux politiques. Dans un contexte postcolonial fortement marqué par la persistance d’un impérialisme culturel français, leur renommée dépasse les frontières de l’Afrique centrale pour s’exporter en Europe et en Amérique, grâce à la popularité d’artistes comme Manu Dibango.
Cet ouvrage raconte la singulière histoire de ces musiques urbaines. De l’effervescence culturelle post-Mai 68 à la diffusion du jazz afro-américain, en passant par la promotion intéressée par l’État français d’une world music francophone, Arielle Nganso met en lumière les facteurs qui ont concouru à leur large diffusion et les logiques impériales qui l’ont structurée.
Elle souligne les grandes difficultés rencontrées par ces musiciens pour produire et diffuser leur art en France : se heurtant notamment à une conception exotisante de leur musique, ces derniers ont été contraints de la formater aux attentes des oreilles occidentales. Enfin, elle réinvestit la question de la restitution des œuvres d’art africaines, en y intégrant le champ musical.

Ok, so I noticed something about the dances #rumba and #ChaChaCha: In dance.clases, they tell you they're basically the same, eccept where you do one long sidewards step in rumba, you do 3 quick ones in ChaCha. That's what they tell you. Now here is this: In ChaCha, you start with a side step lasting one beat, a back and forth lasting one beat each and then "Cha cha cha" lasting 2 beats in total. Then you step forth (1 beat), back (1b), and again "cha cha cha" (2b).

The Republic of the #Congo, also Congo-Brazzaville, was under French colonial rule until its independence in 1960, but the republic had been established two years prior. It is sometimes very hard to keep the two Congos apart; both became independent in 1960 (one from France, the other from Belgium), and then things got politically rather turbulent, however, the DRC was much worse off than its northern counterpart, leading eventually to the 1st and 2nd Congo wars during the 90s-00s, and costing millions of lives. But I'm getting side-tracked from Congo-Brazzaville here; a great example of how the DRC tends to dominate any conversation about the region.
Yesterday I mentioned how the word "jazz" is used in an African context, well, that same thing applies here again. However, in the Republic of the congo, the musical mixing had a different permutation from Guinea. There's much more #rumba and #Caribbean influence present in what later became #soukous, but both Congolese capitals, Brazzaville and Kinshasa, which face each other across the mighty Congo river, contributed to the overall sound of this very popular genre.

De son vrai nom Massiya Lutumba Ndomanueno, l’artiste est décédé samedi 30 mars à Paris, à l’âge de 81 ans. Fidèle compagnon de Franco, grand guitariste et compositeur de talent, on l’appelait tout simplement “Le Poète”.
C’est le seul, ou le premier, qui est venu avec d’autres tournures, d’autres images, ce mec a apporté la lumière dans la façon de voir le texte. Le texte de Simaro c’est d’une profondeur qui est incroyable.
