If you believe that #selfhosting will solve any of your problems with #BigTech, you are mistaken. And I say that as someone who has been self-hosting services for friends and family and himself for more than 15 years.
Can it be done? Sure. Does it feel like you're sticking it to the man? A little. Is it going to bring society as a whole forward? Definitely not. All you're doing is leaning into the idea of #RuggedIndividualism just a little bit more instead of directing your energy towards collective action and policy goals.
It's escapism and it's getting us nowhere.

A slightly better and more balanced article in todays #Essex #Live news site - this time mentioning the risks from /both/ #drugs and #alcohol (doing so also allows the Chief Constable to use the #Colchester #RTC as a warning, apparently its the largest combined loss of life in a #collision in the entire county for some years)
I think the officer is overoptimistic in how much he thinks friends / family would intervene - he's spent most of his early career in MetPol and doesn't appear to have ever served with an RPU (Roads Policing Unit), maybe he's not as aware of the mixed city / urban / rural nature of Essex, limited #PublicTransport outside the cities/towns, and high level of US-inspired #RuggedIndividualism and #CarDependency in this area?

#Monetization is a double edged sword and anyone who disagrees with that must counter this: that which is #unethical is #lucrative.
Let me repeat.
That which is unethical is lucrative.
The #liberals and #conservatives of the west has doped up our brains on delusions of grandeur (mass wealth accumulation) to the point where we stopped caring how we became wealthy.
Here's a hint: it wasn't #RuggedIndividualism, but pure exploitation - in the worst ways.
That's now a #market #precedent.

@dyckron It strikes me that the Achilles heel of Republicans — the weakness that brings them down — is their fervent belief in Rugged Individualism and their apparent belief that Real Men Don't Need to Cooperate. That, plus their suspicion of diversity, even though a lack of diversity often results in lockstep thinking, overlooking alternate approaches and better solutions.

It suddenly struck me that "rugged individualism" is a meme (as described by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene — see, eg, https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&an=Susan+Blackmore&tn=The+Meme+Machine&kn=&isbn=) that acts a lot like a virus. It predominantly infects men and can be seen in many Republicans.

@argentum The term "rugged individualism" which is so often trotted out is quite literally a 1928 political slogan by Herbert Hoover.
If you look at early mentions of the term, virtually all are blisteringly critical.
It is of course a divide-and-conquer tactic.
By contrast, Hobbes' Leviathan is dominated by discussion of the common weal and commonwealth.
