  1. Emerald in the Wild

While hiking through a dense, brushy area in Georgia, I captured this image of a ruby-crowned kinglet, Regulus calendula. Its striking features stood out amidst the tangled vegetation.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

  2. I nearly forgot to show-off this Ruby-crowned Kinglet that foraged in our backyard today. It loved the asparagus fronds, sweet basil, and grapes. It’s quite the rare to see their full crown! #RubyCrownedKinglet #Birds #Fujifilm #SOoC 🪶

  3. Forest Birds

The forest was ominous and still this morning, I could see the mist in the air slowly move eastward. Then around 0800 a flurry of small birds flew in into my backyard from the forest. There were blue jays in the forest treetops imitating the calls of a red-tailed hawk, quite interesting. A pair of cardinals arride and just hung out in the crepe myrtles. Around 0830, I heard the crows, it was as if the forest was just waking. Then suddenly everything when quiet again. Among the small birds was this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula).

  6. Lichen Lookout

I found this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula) while pushing through the brush around and obscure pond in Albany, Georgia. In this image, I particularly like the colors of the plants and the lichen on the tree branches.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

  7. Just Going to Fly Away

Last fall, I was working my way around some thick brush surrounding a pond in Albany, Georgia. I came across this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula). I may have startled the bird, or maybe I was getting too close to a nest.

"A tiny bird seemingly overflowing with energy, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet forages almost frantically through lower branches of shrubs and trees. Its habit of constantly flicking its wings is a key identification clue. Smaller than a warbler or chickadee, this plain green-gray bird has a white eyering and a white bar on the wing. Alas, the male’s brilliant ruby crown patch usually stays hidden—your best chance to see it is to find an excited male singing in spring or summer." - allaboutbirds.org

  8. Merlin saying this songbird is “hyperactive” is no joke. So fast. Real speed.

  10. The Kinglet’s Leap

I saw this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula) in Georgia flittering around in the brush. There was more than one around, I think. I was trying to sneak up on some water birds when this one appeared fairly close by.

"Ruby-crowned Kinglets seem nervous as they flit through the foliage, flicking their wings nearly constantly. Keeping an eye out for this habit can be a useful aid to identifying kinglets." - allaboutbirds.org

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

  11. Blending

I watched this ruby-crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula) filter around in the tall oak tree in my backyard. The bird blended well with the autumn leaves that are starting to change colors.

  12. Something new or not.

Albatrossity pointed out that this is a yellow rumped warbler. After doing more research I agree that it is likely a warbler. Which is not new to me, I've seen one other.

I thought this was ruby-crowned kinglet, a new bird for me. Like the house finch a posted a few minutes ago, this bird was at the top of the same tree on the same day. So, it took some work to get a halfway decent picture out of the small noisy original. But here it is.

  13. On this morning's walk, several Rubycrowns were sufficiently convinced of spring to begin performing their first songs. This sound remains a keystone memory from growing up in Anchorage: long June days amid muskeg and spruce, filled with a song moving from high wiry repeated notes, gathering itself in a quick low earnest trilling, mounting into a clear carol - Liberty! Liberty! - audible a quarter mile away. All that originating in a bird the length of my finger!
