I've tried RTTY with Fldigi and made a few contacts but.....
Do •you• use 'canned' responses or do you type the QSO?
Which do you feel is the more common approach to RTTY QSOs?

Encouraged by the discussions on a particular "comms" Discord channel I'm going to embark on experimenting receiving and decoding #RTTY (radio teletype) with my Shortwave radio, a RTTY decoder and a composite monitor.

The RTTY unit is from FleaBay and got it reduced from £75 to £60 which is remarkable I think. This particular model is of 1981 vintage.

How's it going with #cqcontest in #rtty you ask? Even if you don't ask, I gonna tell anyway.
Usually I do fast snappy CW contesting. RTTY is soooo slloooowww.
Usually I have a beefy kW amp running. I decided to go barefoot, rig at 90W out. Moohahaaa...
Usually the yagi is between 15m and 21m AGL. I left the tower down so the tribander sits only 8m high.
'nuff said?
And I worked 11 Dutch(wo)men in the #pacc contest on 28MHz.

My #ADK #POTA trip to Limekiln Lake was a success.

180+ QSOs & 3 activations - all on solar power in a forest with too much shade AND most of my time on the #lateshift.

I managed to work stations on 10, 20, 40, and 80 meters. I was successful on FT4 , FT8, and SSB. While I tried #RTTY, I never got a call back. I'll keep trying, however.

All this was done with a #XieguG90 and an 80m #EFHW up 15-20ft.

Do you think we've had enough closed, irreproducible, proprietary digital modes contaminating the #hamradio hobby (#ROS, #VARA, #DMR, #YSF, #DSTAR, etc.)? Well, now we've got #LORA for #APRS.

No: ham radio should be based on open, free standards. There are plenty of free, open, well documented digital modes (#FT8, #JS9, #WSPR, #M17, #PSK, #Olivia, #RTTY) in addition to the oldest-ever digital mode (#CW). Please support ways of operation everyone can inspect, modify, or build a radio around.

I have a #digital related question for people of the #hamradio community.

Does anyone know of a #transceiver that does good 5W on digital modes like #FT8 #PSK #JS8 #RTTY etc. I just want to only run digital modes with it. I been looking at #uBITX V6 and #QDX etc but interested peoples input. One the reasons I looking into this is cause my station runs off of solar and battery and my current radios draw 5-6A at 5W on FT4/8 etc

Looking forward to monitoring a scheduled #RTTY QSO. #W8FSA 146.92 PL100 repeater in Ypsilanti MI (St. Joes), should be reachable from Ann Arbor and the western Detroit suburbs. Planned time is 400p local on 2023-12-26, 2100 UTC.

I've been operating as #W1AW/2 that last couple of days using #SSB (40M, 20M, 10M)

At 2:00 - 4:00 UTC, I'll be operating again but using #RTTY somewhere between 7.080 MHz and 7.100 MHz (probably 7.085 or so).

Conditions have improved significantly over the last couple of hours so if you want to give a shout or try RTTY, you know where I'll be.

We had 3 Stations on last week.
I will call CQ at 7 PM and if nothing heard, I will just go into RX Mode.

Looking forward to what will be a regular #RTTY net on the #W8FSA 146.92 repeater in Ypsilanti (St Joes). Al #K8WXQ is net control. The first scheduled net was yesterday 2024-03-04, the next one is next Monday 2024-03-11 at 700p Eastern.

This starts 60 minutes before the #ARROW net on #W8RP 146.96 Monday nights 800p.

When I did this last I used #DroidRTTY to encode/decode, will be looking for RTTY software that can run on my MacBook Air (either MacOS or iOS worth a try).
