I actually have some free time this afternoon, so finished #Bodkin and then was going to watch an episode or two of the new #DoctorWho - which is on #disneyplus , right? Except it's not there. A quick search tells me no, the whole world gets it there except UK and Ireland. Ireland, it's supposed to be on the #rtePlayer - except it's not. All they have are the most recent Tennant specials.

So - I guess I go sailing the high seas then? #Arrr #ffs

From The Journal: "RTÉ to cut 400 jobs, limit presenter salaries and make users [sign-in] for streaming"

While it's part of the headline, the only mention of the sign-in requirement in the article (so far as I can see) is the following:

Now all RTÉ Player users will have to sign in to stream.

I have a feeling that it isn't going to be as easy as all that:
Why require viewers to sign-in?
What will be done with the viewing profile data associated with the signed-in viewers?
What's the legal basis for such a requirement? Will there need to be a change to legislation? Has RTÉ prepared the proposed change?

I have a feeling we're going to see the same story play out yet again:

• RTÉ will assert with unsupported confidence that it's all above-board;
• legislators will go along with that, taking advice only from RTÉ;
• experts who see things differently will have their reputations smeared by RTÉ and its political supporters;
• the DPC will be called in to examine the arrangement, first complaining that RTÉ won't allow them to review the details (citing, no doubt, commercial sensitivity), and then ruling that what's proposed is of course not legal under the prevailing data protection regime.

If I could be arsed, one workaround for this typical #RTÉ incompetence would be to cast from the #RTEPlayer on my phone to the TV - or maybe not.

Installing the RTÉ Player on a smart TV doesn't seem like an unreasonable thing to do, does it?

But yeah, as @Tarbh says, "Because #RTÉ...". The Radio people were online long before the TV side of the house, and probably did everything they could not to get sucked into the shitshow that was #RTÉPlayer
