  1. Slowly getting back into aquarelle painting again.
Two evenings ago I painted this wintery scene based on a photograph I took in #Bodø just under 3 years ago, around 9 in the morning.
Quite satisfied with how it turned out, especially the sun coming up from behind the mountains, though less so with the recognisability of the mountains.

Paper: 230 grams A5 paper from Søstrene Grene, 100% paper.
Paint: a mix of Panduro Watercolour Set Basic, Van Gogh Water Colour, Daniel Smith Hansa Yellow Light, and some white gouache.

  3. Finally did some aquarelle painting again last night!
This time I used the cover art for the #MSX game #Snatcher by #Konami as inspiration along with some in-game sprite work to fill in some blanks.

The image is marked as sensitive due to eye-contact, the droid's cybernetic nature and minor gore in the form of blood splatters and singular 'human' eye.

It's painted on 300 gsm cold-pressed wood-free paper from Søstrene Grene with aquarelle water colour paints from Royal Talens' "Van Gogh" line.

  4. CW: long (close to 3000 chars) follow-up post going into detail on the water color papers used.

The A5 "Anna & Clara's Watercolour Paper" pad of 20 x 200 grams + 10 x 300 grams I bought for 34.90 NOK (or 3.20 EUR) from #SøstreneGrene is not great imho... I think it's probably more aimed at gouache than aquarelle...
I find it too smooth, and water mostly just pools up too much on top of it... The field of flowers was painted on the 200 grams paper, but as the (lack of) texture is the same on the 300 grams sheets, I doubt those will be much better. Though I bet the latter will at least buckle and warp less.

The A5 "Anna & Clara's Watercolour Paper Acid-Free" pad with 10 x 230 grams white sheets + 10 x 230 grams black sheets onto which I painted the bottom-left #BaldursGate scene is more like the similar paper I got and used previously from Søstrene Grene (which I used for the top-left Baldur's Gate scene).
It has quite some more texture, and —most importantly— it absorbs the water and paints better. I suspect it's actually the same paper, but now the pads have half their sheets replaced with black sheets.

I kinda wish they'd put the original pads back into their assortment instead, as the black sheets are more useful for metallic water colour paints, which I currently don't have. I guess I could play around with mixing the white gouache with my aquarelle paints, and use that on the black sheets?
At 23.30 NOK (or 1.98 EUR) for 20 sheets, it's cheap aquarelle paper that works quite well for my practice sessions, but with half of the sheets being basically unusable for me, it's not as affordable as the pads they previously sold...

I still want to add some more foliage to the first Baldur's Gate painting (top-left), but I wanted to wait for daytime sunlight before working on it again, so instead I started a new one without looking at the example.
(And I'll probably want to scan the first one before working on it again, in case I ruin it...)

The cute little ghost on A6 paper is the main character from #MrGhost aka #Yuureikun for the #MSX, which I painted two days ago. Painted with just the #PrussianBlue and the #OpaqueWhite from the #RoyalTalens' #VanGogh series. I was tempted to add the light-green background to it that one of the example screenshots had, but ended up just sticking to the monochrome version you see here.
This paper is a fine-grained cold pressed cotton rag postcard paper from #Fabriano, which I got many years ago as a kid, but never really used till recently. I always found the paper too precious, and considered my skills lacking too much to make proper use of it. It's only recently that I've felt comfortable using it.

I'll take proper pictures of them by daylight tomorrow, and will maybe add some more detailed image descriptions then as well.

  5. Got some more #aquarelle #painting done. :)
I started with some wet-on-wet experimenting on the top half, and then had to come up with what I would fill the remainder of the A5 #SøstreneGrene #waterColour paper with.
Ended up with some kind of wet-on-dry river with wet-on-wet beach scene, even though the tones don't quite match the lighting of the sky, I guess. :)

It was good to experiment a bit with techniques though, and to not follow an example directly.

  6. Decided to clear my mind a bit by #painting by the light of the #midnightSun.
Went with my take on what I remembered from an Easy Misty Forest painting tutorial by TheFrugalCrafter Lindsay Weirich on YouTube.
It's not quite finished; I'd like to add another tree in the foreground, as well as some foliage around the top and edges, but the mosquitoes are starting to eat me up... and I'd like these layers to fully dry before adding the final ones.

Painted with a mix of #RoyalTalens' #VanGogh and #Panduro water colour paints on 180 grammes woodfree aquarelle A5 paper from #Dekorima / #Colart Sweden.

Paper buckles a bit too much from the water; I guess I should go with thicker paper, but it blends a lot better than on the cheap Nassau Fine Art aquarelle paper pad I'd been using lately.

  7. Picked up my package of new #waterColour / #aquarelle #paints today, so it was also time to clean up and re-arrange my #waterColours #painting case.
Added six new half-pans from #RoyalTalens' #VanGogh brand which I'd ordered last week from #Panduro here in Norway.
All of them are new colours to me, so I'm looking forward to swatching them and putting them to use. Some of them are convenience colours (Permanent Yellow-Green and Permanent Orange).
Another is a different shade of red (Vermillion Red, in addition to the Permanent Red Deep from earlier) because I didn't like the ones that came in the Panduro base set.
Others are to try them out and compare them to the ones I already use, such as the Gamboge Yellow 238 (which looked nice and vibrant on the online sample), and Prussian Blue (because it's such an often referenced colour, and I'm not always satisfied with the ultramarine).
And finally some Opaque White, so I don't have to mix guache with my aquarelle paints when I want to add some white.

  8. Gros article sur l'#aquarelle : comprendre les informations techniques de ses couleurs avant d'acheter (les infos en tout petit sur l'étiquette !)
