Exciting day with a new #royalcam #albatross family selected for the year ahead - WYL & BOK nesting at Plateau.
Coincidentally had two adorable little albie plushies make the trek from NZ to my desk today, a wonderful way to mark the occasion!

Wonderful to hear that SSTrig fledged today!
Only discovered the livestream at the start of the year and became absolutely enamoured seeing the parents GLG and RLK caring for the tiny little chick. There were so many adorable moments as she grew up, going from a tiny little dinosaur to the fluffiest cloud you've ever seen, then making it through the awkward middle phase to emerge as the epitome of flight.I've also been deeply impressed by the dedication and care of the @RoyalCam rangers in looking after the albatross families. We only got a little glimpse with SSTrig's weigh-ins and feedings, but it must be quite the job keeping up with all the other chicks around Taiaroa Head. That said, it was also very amusing watching as SSTrig got loaded into increasingly large laundry baskets as she grew up.
I'm going to miss watching the little albie, but really excited for her next adventure travelling the world!

Albatross nesting has begun for the year at Dunedin in New Zealand 😀
The pair on the live cam this year are RLK (red-lime-black), a 12 year old male, and GLG (green-lime-green), a 14 year old female, which successfully raised two chicks in 2021 and 2023. GLG laid their egg on the 11th of November and it usually takes about two and a half months for the egg to hatch. Watch:

And today the baby albatross, TF, fledged! He hatched way back on January 23 and fledged exactly 8 months later.
His mum, LGL, came back just afterwards and is now looking around wondering where he went.

There are two nests in view this year, with albatross pairs currently taking turns to incubate their eggs:
