Royal British Legion Garden of Remembrance opens
The Garden of Remembrance is outside Morgan’s Hotel and was officially blessed on Sunday at an event led by the Vicar of Swansea Minster, Canon Justin Davies.
Also in attendance on the day were Lord Mayor, Cllr Cheryl Philpott, the Joint Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr Andrea Williams and the council’s Armed Forces Champion Cllr Wendy Lewis.
The Garden of Remembrance forms part of Swansea’s countdown to November 11. On that day the city’s main Cenotaph on the sea front and many other businesses, homes and memorials will fall silent at 11am for the National Two-Minute Silence.
On November 11 civic dignitaries including the Lord Mayor, Cllr Hopkins, councillors, the Royal British Legion, veterans and the public will join together at Swansea’s Cenotaph for Armistice Day’s National Two Minute Silence.
This year Portland Street in the city centre will also fall silent at a special Swansea Remembers event organised by the council and the local branch of the Royal British Legion.
Cllr Philpott said: “Two minutes of quiet contemplation is a symbol of our gratitude to those who went into harm’s way protecting our freedom, and those who still do.
“Shared across Swansea and the rest of the UK at the same moment, it is a poignant reminder of a shared heritage of sacrifice and endeavour coming as we also remember the 80th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day.”
On Remembrance Sunday, November 9, there will be many community commemorations around the city attended by ward members, veterans and local families. You can find out more about them here www.swansea.gov.uk/remembrance
Among the other commemorative events taking place this Remembrance season are:
6pm for 7pm. Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at Brangwyn Hall. The public are welcome to come along. You don’t need tickets but must be in your seat by 6.30pm.
10.30am for 11am. Cenotaph Service.
1.50pm. The Royal British Legion’s Swansea’s Remembrance Parade will take place in Oxford Street.
6.45am for 7.15am. Poppies for Paddington ceremony at Swansea Railway Station.
10.15am for 11am. Cenotaph, Swansea. Remembrance Service.
10.30am for 11am. Portland Street. Swansea Remembers.
Civic buildings around Swansea will fall silent on November 11 at 11am for the National Two Minute Silence.
The Guildhall will be lit in Poppy red on the evenings of November 9 and November 11.
Swansea Council’s Joint Deputy Leader David Hopkins said:
“As councillors it’s our privilege to be part of commemorations that tell the story of the sacrifice and service of our armed forces.”
Council Joint Leader Andrea Williams added:
“We will be at events across Swansea as local representatives to express the gratitude of our communities to veterans and current members of the armed forces for what they do for us.
“But I know we’ll be joined by many other people for what is one of the most important – and most poignant – anniversaries of the year. If you can attend an event near you, please do.”
Poppies are on sale at a number of council venues around the city, including Swansea Market, a number of libraries and the Civic Centre.
The council’s Armed Forces Champion Wendy Lewis said:
“Swansea has a proud history of honouring our armed forces and all those who go in harm’s way to keep the rest of us safe.
“In the coming days it’s important that we reflect on the sacrifices others have made.”

Swansea launches annual Poppy Appeal with city market ceremony
Launch at Swansea Market
The launch took place at Swansea Market, chosen as the venue to bring the appeal into the heart of the city. The event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Cheryl Philpott, Council Leader Cllr Rob Stewart, Cllr Wendy Lewis, the council’s Armed Forces Champion, and representatives from the Royal British Legion.
The Poppy Appeal is the Legion’s UK‑wide campaign to raise funds for veterans and their families. This year’s appeal carries added poignancy as it coincides with the 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day.
“Wear your poppy with pride”
Cllr Philpott said the appeal was a vital opportunity to honour those who had given their lives for freedom:
“So many local people have made the ultimate sacrifice over the years. This year is the 80th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day and the generation which gave us everything and is gradually passing on, deserve our respect and remembrance. I would encourage everyone to give what they can to the appeal and wear their poppy with pride.”
Council Leader Cllr Rob Stewart added:
“Our veterans need our support and the Royal British Legion does brilliant work for them and for serving members of the armed forces. We should all give what we can in this year’s Poppy Appeal.”
Community remembrance events
A series of remembrance events will take place across Swansea in the coming weeks, including:
“A symbol of sacrifice”
Phillip Flower, Chairman of the Royal British Legion in Swansea, said the poppy remained a powerful emblem:
“The poppy has been the emblem and a rallying‑point for Royal British Legion fundraising for well over a century. It is a reminder of the poppies of Flanders, where so many gave their lives during World War I.”
Poppies will be available at council venues across the city, including libraries, the Guildhall and the Civic Centre.

Tributes to Llanelli World War II veteran and author Idwal Davies BEM
Mr Davies passed away peacefully on 17 September surrounded by his family.
The Royal British Legion’s Llanelli Branch described him as a “much‑loved member of our community” who gave generously of his time and talents to support the Poppy Appeal.
The Military Veterans Club Cymru also paid tribute, saying:
Idwal Davies BEM with Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards“It is with huge sadness and loss that we announce the passing of WW2 Veteran Mr Idwal Davies BEM. Idwal was loved by all and will be sorely missed. He was with his family and passed peacefully last night. This photograph was to be presented to Idwal on his 99th birthday in November and it is with Idwal’s son’s blessing we share both this image and sad news. Rest in Peace Idwal, thank you for your service sir.”
Honoured for service to community
In June this year, Mr Davies was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honours for his tireless community work. A familiar face at Prince Philip Hospital, he volunteered with the Llanelli and District Hospital Friends, raising thousands of pounds through book sales. He also donated proceeds from his own book Gone, But Not Forgotten to charity, and supported the local Salvation Army.
Wartime service
Mr Davies served in the British Army during the Second World War. In an interview recorded for the Peoples Collection Wales in 2024, he spoke about his experiences of service and the importance of remembrance, themes that shaped his later life.
A life remembered
Friends and fellow veterans have described him as “an inspiration” and “a true gentleman who never stopped giving back to his community.”
Funeral details will be announced in due course.

#ArmisticeDay holds a special place in my heart as it was a day my Grandad would proudly get dressed in his finest and join other #veterans in the local parade. He'd be out for weeks to collect for the #RoyalBritishLegion and sell #poppys and take time out of his day to check in with fellow members.
He was one of the #kindest, #smartest and #funny men I've ever had the pleasure to meet. He is my #hero and I hope that he's watching down on us from where ever he is and smiling.
