@KrajciTom @ai6yr Often. Firefighting conditions and tactics vary across regions. In Oregon, we are in the midst of a worsening drought, meaning low soil moisture and more drying of fuels to a level we normally see in late August.
Hot, windy conditions combined with steep topography in a lot of our state means that fires have a chance to spread rapidly. The #RowenaFire in the Columbia Gorge that started a few weeks ago spread from zero to about 2500 acres in a single day.
I'd say that #NM has similar conditions, but has seen longer drought conditions with hotter weather. Those conditions coupled with steep topography in the mountainous landscape outside of Alomogordo, this concern makes sense. The flaming front has split from one into two 'heads' and the wind-driven fire is spotting. There is a potential for large fire growth.

Hot & dry conditions, worse on the east side of the Cascade Range, has given an early start to fire season in inland #PNW. I-84 in Oregon apparently still closed.Never ignore an order to evacuate. The fire officials have information that you do not.
The symbols on the map are heat detections from MODIS and VIIRS satellites. This data is *not* real time and locations are approximate. Sometimes this data is ‘false positive’.
This data updates several times during the day. To read more about this kind of data, open the map and click “Map tips” in the upper left corner.
