I found a lovely tool for planning long-distance cycling or walking routes, where you need to resupply along the route:
You upload your GPX route, set a distance you're willing to go from it, and get a map with gas stations, supermarkets, cafes, bakeries, etc. on it as POI. You can then select favorites, and export them as GPX again, to use when riding or walking.

This example shows a #Vegrún map of the Bucharest to Budapest river cruise we will go on this year. It doesn't show the flights, but the yellow is bus routes and the blue is river routes. So I'm building a mapping platform that lets you stitch together every leg of your trip—flights, trains, buses, ferries, car rentals, bike rides, and hikes—on a single, beautiful, interactive map. #TravelMap #RoutePlanning #EuropeTrip #TravelDestinations

That's a nice concept for a online tool (still in alpha stage if I get it right). You can load a gpx file, input how far you're willing to go off route, and then it shows all relevant POIs that are known through open street map. The idea is that you can reexport the track with the POIs included.

Also, I was riding a couple of years old route. The two deviations by blocked paths would totally have been caught by hitting "edit" in Komoot. With RidewithGps, not so much. 😞
I really try to get away from Komoot, but there's a significant feature gap. -
⛰️ Don’t improvise in the mountains.
Find your route now and take full control of every journey. 🧭
Create, plan, edit and record routes with offline maps and smart navigation — tools built for those who go prepared, not by chance.
Trust Locus Map to handle the details — so you can focus on the terrain ahead.

Are there any first hand experiences in Komoot alternatives for route review and sharing?
What I practically need is a platform to share gpx tracks, visualize them on a rendered map and show geotagged JPGs in place as Komoot does.
PS: Open source with the ability to self host would be nice. But it's in no way necessary.

When planning a route in Locus Map 4, always place shaping points between intersections, not directly on them.
1. Always put the shaping points between the intersections.
2. Do NOT place the shaping point on the intersections.
3. Inaccurate placement of shaping points causes glitches on the route.Misplaced points = glitches & wrong turn commands 🚫🗺️

#ÖBB #BahnBubble : why the train categories at fahrplan.oebb.at have been recently broken? In Poland having SKM (and some other... regional) trains as Fernzüge is quite disastrous... though the situation in France with TERs in the same category is even advantageous for me

Ok now they're just taking the piss. At the five hour mark I get to visit...Mars. Pennsylvania.
-
IMPORTANT UPDATE! I have discovered that if I keep driving past East Texas, another ~3h will be all that's required to arrive in…drumroll please…
ALASKA!
…, Pennsylvania.
Wondering if PA has all other 50 states contained within it, like some sort of American matroyshka doll.
-
DID YOU KNOW: my home in northern #NewJersey is only a 1h15m drive from East Texas!
…specifically, the town of East Texas, Pennsylvania.

Last time I moved, Strava still offered free route planning… Or maybe I was a Strava subscriber because it was valuable?? Can’t remember.
But new home means new routes, but privacy is more of a concern these days. Haven’t played with it yet, but OsmAnd has a solid take on privacy, open source, and tracker free. On my todo list for after work.
(Since I haven’t needed route planning in a few years, I’m probably late to the OsmAnd party! 🤣)

Want to go somewhere this weekend, but not sure where?
Try following your shadow...or if you don't want to do that - have a look at where it would have taken you.
I made a thing, and wrote about it:

Looking for a tool to compare different routes (visualization, length, duration) on a single map. Bonus if I can plan multi-stop trips and see how long each segment is.
It’s tedious to compare via Google Maps. I saw someone mentioning a tool that he built where you can just write from to in a textfield and it plots on the map.
-
The cooler weather is here, which means I can seriously start to look at, and train towards the 19km route that I have had my eye on all summer.
Parts of it are going to need working out, so might have to hop on / hop off a bus so I can walk some of the sections that I think will be problems - but we'll see how feasible it is. -
I believe I have made this complaint/request before, but I will put it out there again, now that my ebike is actually fixed and I can ride again.
It seems that most, if not all bike route planning apps use the Google maps philosophy of you put in Point A (where you want to leave from) and Point Z and it finds the "best" route for you automatically based on some lovely AI "data."
I find that the routes made from this are not ideal and trying to "improve" them is even more frustrating. Some along the lines of, I want to avoid X Street, so I move the route and the entire thing changes and I have to start over.
On the other hand "full manual mode" is just drawing lines on the map, doesn't follow streets from point to point and is useless.
What I would like is something that allows me to put a point on a map (say my front door) and another point (the end of street 2KM away) and have it draw a route line between those two points that sticks to roads or trails. And then the next point and so on until I say I am am done. Then the app tells me how long the route is, how much elevation gain and so on.
Any ideas? Thanks!

A tip for #skatecommuting or any #micromobility #routeplanning. See if your city has a pavement condition #map. I like to check that whenever I’m exploring new routes. Combined with recent #StreetView imagery it helps you find the good stuff. Buttery smooth vs. busted up makes a big difference.
For instance here’s the one for #Dallas

Another one in the #routeplanning gone wrong series. Something is going horribly wrong with our routing graph here! 😭

The company I work for (for 2 days per week) has finally joined here as well! If you are interested in #urbanism, #mobility and #MobilityTools, follow them at @anyways
Quite a bit of our work involves #routeplanning, specifically for #cyclists touching upon many aspects such as #roadSafety and comfort (as our tools should help to improve this)

Hi! We are new here, so an #introduction. We are ANYWAYS and we develop tools for #mobility studies: we offer a private copy of #OpenStreetMap where you can experiment with alternative mobility scenarios by comparing #routeplanning of the new with the current situation.
We love #cycling #infrastructure as well - it is an important part in our toolchain too. As such, we did some research into quantifying the #safety of a #cycleway - read all about this in our blog: https://www.anyways.eu/blog/2023-01-05-why-dont-kids-cycle
