Today is the 73rd birthday of GEOFF TRAVIS, founder of both Rough Trade Records and the Rough Trade chain of record shops.
A former drama teacher and owner of a record shop, Travis founded the Rough Trade label in 1978. Writer Douglas Wolk credited Travis as virtually defining "the British post-punk sound." A few of the bands Travis brought to prominence via his Rough Trade label are The Fall, Subway Sect, Stiff Little Fingers, Swell Maps, Television Personalities, The Raincoats, The Smiths, The Go-Betweens, Belle & Sebastian, The Strokes, The Libertines, Scritti Politti, Augustus Pablo, Cabaret Voltaire, and Kleenex.
