I think one of the most beautiful texts in #marxism (to me at least) is Rosa Luxemburg's 'Order Prevails in Berlin'. It was the last piece she wrote, a few hours before she was brutally murdered by the counter-revolutionary, proto-fascist Freikorps. In it, she expresses an eternal hope for the future, how every defeat of socialism is just another lesson learned on the path to inevitable victory. If not now, then tomorrow, or maybe next year, or some future generation, but victory nonetheless.
It's a hope, a certainty, that no longer exists, in my mind, thanks to the capitalist-induced #ClimateCrisis
Though, to be sure, this doesn't imply defeatism, but should urge us to built our struggle on post-hope foundations.

Karl Liebknecht was assassinated during the same arrest as Rosa Luxemburg and 2 other founders of the Spartacus League died early in 1919 as well, so the League came to an end.
In the beginning of 1919 there were several revolts, strikes and establishments of communist council republics (on local level). They were violently overthrown by government and paramilitary troops, and the temporary government ended up founding the Weimar republic (still in 1919). The centrist parties chose to align with the old elites over the revolutionaries. In this context the Nazi party was founded in 1920.

On 5 January 1919 mass strikes broke out against the temporary government. It was called the Spartacist uprising, though they didn't start it. The goverment employed right-wing paramilitary units to crush the uprising. By 13 January the revolt was suppressed and the Spartacist leaders went into hiding. They were discovered 2 days later, and Rosa Luxemburg was arrested and then assassinated.

Rosa Luxemburg was released from prison on 9 November 1918, just in the beginning of the German Revolution.
The German revolution of 1918–1919, also known as the November Revolution, was an uprising started by workers and soldiers in the final days of World War I. In the first month it quickly and almost bloodlessly brought down the German Empire.
Luxemburg and Liebknecht (also just released from prison) reunited in Berlin and founded the Spartacus League with their friends of the Gruppe Internationale. They plunged into the revolution and together with other revolutionary groups they founded the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) on 1 January 1919.

She was released in 1916, but re-arrested a few months later, and stayed in prison without trial until 1918. Unable to participate in direct political action, she used her time in prison to write.
She celebrated the Russian Revolution of 1917 from prison but was very critical of the immediate aftermath as well. She praised Lenin and Trotsky for the revolution but didn't agree with certain decisions, such as the abolition of press freedom and the restriction of suffrage. She also disagreed with their agrarian policy of distributing land to individual peasants rather than nationalizing it, and their support for the right of nations to self-determination. Luxemburg was a firm internationalist, and she saw self-determination as enhancing nationalism and undermining the unification of the proletariat.
In 1915 Rosa Luxemburg was imprisoned for one year due to the mutiny trial. In prison she wrote The Crisis of Social Democracy, which became known as the Junius Pamphlet after the pseudonym she used. This pamphlet became the core manifest of the Spartakusbund. She called class revolution the only solution against imperialism and militarism, summed up in the slogan "socialism or barbarism".
In 1913 World War 1 was imminent. Rosa Luxemburg gave a speech in which she called for the (working class) German soldiers to not pick up arms against fellow soldiers from France. She was charged with inciting soldiers to mutiny. While the trial (and the appeal) were ongoing, she went on a speech tour, drawing large crowds, rallying around anti-militarism.
She also had an affair with her lawyer, Paul Levi, who later became the leader of the German communist party.
Just after the outbreak of the war in 1914, the SPD voted in favour of war expenditures, ratifying their pro-militarist stance. Luxemburg now publicly declared to be against the SPD and founded an opposition group, together with her friends Karl Liebknecht and Clara Zetkin (ao).
This group was initially called Gruppe Internationale, but was later renamed to Spartacus League (Spartakusbund).

Rosa Luxemburg wrote about the European destruction of Native Americans and enslaved Africans, British colonialism in India and China, and French colonialism in Algeria. She denounced the German genocide in Namibia.

In 1910 strikes were emerging following a failed resolution regarding voting rights. Luxemburg wanted the SPD to join the strikes but the party leaders didn't want to alienate bourgeois allies or jeopardize the elections. Luxemburg accused them of cowardice and of abandoning Marxist principles for parliamentary expediency. This was the start of Luxemburgs fallout with the SPD.
In 1912 the SPD won the elections, giving the parliamentary wing of the party even more influence, further disillusioning Luxemburg.
This period led to her development of a comprehensive theory of imperialism, published in her major theoretical work, The Accumulation of Capital. She linked capitalism, imperialism and colonialism, and was met with criticism from notable Marxists.

Back in Berlin she was imprisoned again for two months because of another speech.
Her bf escaped Polish prison and got back to Germany, but Luxemburg broke up with him, and started a relationship with a younger guy.
In 1907 she became a lecturer in political economy and economic history at the SPD's new Central Party School in Berlin, a school for internal education of SPD functionaries.
