  1. Australia:

But it was rooftop PV that had the biggest impact, reaching a new Q1 high of 4,090 MW this quarter, and increasing its share to 15.8 per cent of total supply and remaining the single largest renewable contributor. AEMO notes that it is suppressing coal and gas generation during the day

  3. Happy #EarthDay!

While our family thinks a lot about climate change and find so many things going on so difficult to fight against, one of the things I'm happy to have done this past year is completely electrify our home, which suffers Canadian winters, where most rely on methane to heat their homes and/or their hot water.

It was part of our "OK, we've moved in to this new (to us) place and we're making some changes we've been wanting to do for quite some time" craziness we went through last year, with the end result being swapping out the house's gas stove, furnace and hot water tank (induction stoves completely kick ass, a hybrid heat pump hot water tank is pretty cool, and a modern heat pump + electric backup furnace has been great so far).

And the 13KW solar setup we put on the roof should hopefully generate all the electricity we'll need in a year (using BC Hydro as the battery presently) - we'll know in the coming months.

While these things feel like baby steps, I take them as pretty cool wins personally. Just wish I could do more about the corrupt dinkos ruining North America.

This coming year I'm hoping we can find ways to cut down on the plastics coming in to the house. We recycle every little last bit of it that we can, but we're aware of just how little that actually means.

Consuming less helps, but where it's hard to consume less like at the grocery store, it seems each month there's something new that's got some new plastic packaging covering a thing that previously was in something better.

    Stuff to work on.

  4. Interestingly, we don't have to pay DSIM fee on own power we generate. Which is common sense, but I'd expect them to find a way... // It's a fee that allows utilities to recover costs associated with energy efficiency programs.

We also don't have to pay the ridiculous "2021 Winter Storm Fee" they get away with charging us on a per kWh basis. Really glad to see that one gone.

Though, it's not lost on me that by skipping that fee, it'll fall on our non-solar neighbors.

  5. We just received our first full month post-solar electric bill. It's ~$16. $14 of that is flat fees we can't do anything about.

The bills are unlikely to continue to be this low. We've mostly been able to avoid running the AC so far, and limit using the power hungry electric clothes dryer in the basement.

  6. Sunlight has to travel 93 million miles to reach our panels. But none of those miles are though the Strait of Hormuz.

  7. I'm brand new to having rooftop solar. We only got permission to operate just over a month ago. It has been a lot of fun to keep up with usage and see where we stand. We've had what feels like a lot of cloudy days, I pay attention to that stuff now. Despite clouds, our billing period ends this week and so far we're at net 13 kWh from the grid.

  8. Turns out, if the weather mostly cooperates, we don't run the AC most days, don't do laundry, don't cook anything (no kitchen, so... Ha!) and don't charge @Jillianmarisa's EV, our #RooftopSolar can generate more power than we consume over the week. Yay?

That's still charging my PHEV, dealing with an old/inefficient electric water heater and carrying the home's base load.

  9. Ooooh. Now, that I've convinced the Domestic Department of Internal Affairs (DDIA) of roof top solar to be a good idea, this site doesn't work any more:

    solarpower.cer.auckland.ac.nz/

Any suggestions on what other resources for input on planning/decision making would be suitable?

I'd think we'd start with a set of panels up front, and in future years add battery storage later on (to make it more manageable from a financial perspective).

  10. I finally installed our new EV charging station. Pretty cool, you can control how many amps you want.

We are at peak solar production right now. With a minor current adjustment we’re charging @Jillianmarisa’s car on pure sunshine, carrying the home’s base load, and still exporting ~500 watts to the grid. Too dang cool! Weeeeeee!

  11. Today our rooftop solar generated ~75% of our power. I bet we would have been >100% had we not charged Jillian’s car and not washed (and dried) multiple comforters. None of this is a problem, just excited commentary. So much fun.

  12. It was supposed to be sunny today. It is thus far, not. However the still 100% cloud coverage is the thinnest it has been all week, except for a few very brief Sol Peekaboos yesterday.

We’re on track for our best solar production day ever. Yay!

  13. Our solar panels are generating 300 W of juice despite it being morning, still pretty dark, and surprisingly foggy. Looking forward to our first full day of these guys with the naked sun. Maybe this weekend? Maybe?

  14. Sooooo. A nice IBEW fella came, knocked on the door said we’d have a small blip in power while he confirmed the install AND added the extra meter. Today we formally add solar to the list of things we harvest here at #MacJohnsonFarm, phase 3.

Exporting power even with it being super cloudy out. Weeee!

  15. Running on solar this afternoon. So glad to have to rooftop panels up!

I've noticed about a dozen other homes in my conservative rural Virginia neighborhood doing the same, and the town rec center recently got a large rooftop system as well. It gives me hope that some things are still moving in the right direction, even in these dark times.
