  1. I visited the Roman fort at Rough Castle today, for the first time in probably 40-45 years. I think my dad took me when I was small, although there’s a chance I’m (mis)remembering a visit from having seen photographs and what I otherwise know about sites along the Antonine Wall: the spectre of memory at the edge of empire.

What most sticks in my mind are the lilia, the defensive pit traps on the outside of the wall (seen in the first picture). The last picture shows the line of the Antonine Wall, which was only ever a turf wall with the deep ditch on the left.

It made me a little sad that I was alone there at what is a very impressive Roman site, apart from some dog walkers who seemed oblivious to what was beneath their feet, and a cold and bitter rain that refused to leave my side.

  6. Looking forward to teaching a class on #RomanScotland for the students of the Notre Dame London Global Gateway tomorrow. There is a lot to cover in one hour, but I hope to at least mention the two new fortlets at Carleith and Bonnyside on the #AntonineWall.

  11. RIB3515. It was found 1958 in the bed of the Almond below the Roman Fort of Bertha, north of Perth. It is now in #Perth and this was it on display there in 2019. It is a dedication to the Discip(u)lina Augusti, a military cult that first appears under #Hadrian and continues into the Severan period. Given the history of the area it is most likely from the Antonine phase of #Bertha fort.

  12. Spent quite a bit of time during the last 2 days inventorying medals and updating their locations in Axiell. All I can see is numbers every time I close my eyes! However, I got some light relief when my son showed me his playmobil set up of the Romans invading Britain (he's doing the Romans at school) Need to get him over to #Trimontium ! The ominous Tyrannosaurus Rex in the background made me chuckle #RomanScotland #cataloguing #museum #parentsofmastodon

  13. If any one is interested in #RomanRoads then there's a free talk from Andrew Tibbs (#RomanScotland chap) on Thursday 24th Nov. Sign up here eventbrite.co.uk/e/conquest-th If you can't make it, which I doubt I will as I'm at #Revs that day, you can catch up on YouTube afterwards
