  1. I accompanied a friend to the market in Sittingbourne this lunchtime, and whilst standing in the high street (it's closed to traffic on market days) thought to try out the zoom capabilities of my phone. It's part of the old Roman 'Watling Street', so is nice and straight 🙂 #Sittingbourne #RomanRoad #Kent #England

  6. Langlade (French pronunciation: [lɑ̃ɡlad]; #Occitan: L'Anglada) is a #commune and a village in the #Gard #department in southern #France located some 15 km (9.3 mi) southwest of #Nîmes. The village is situated in an area of low #hills and plains known as the #Vaunage and has existed since at least 1125. It was built near to a #RomanRoad and had a small church at its centre. In the 17th century a staging point was set up on the Roman road nearby.

  7. Made an enemy of the moles.

I live on glacial till (thanks, 🇨🇦!) so the large river and drainage rock are sifted from my own yard for Roman Roads. But never have I seen one push a larger rock through the drainage. The top 1-2" layer of 5/8- seems to be a key addition.

*Burowfolk are fine; we dont kill or trap.

  8. Haven't been on here because spent the previous week on a bike trip. It was lovely. The first part was a rails-to-trails path and the second half was the old roman road / pilgrims path.

    Highlights:
🪨 Biked on a roman road and counted down the roman mile stones!
    🏞️ Pretty landscapes
    🍽️ Ate well
    🫏 Slept next to donkeys
💑 Spent time with my partner

    Accomplishments:
🚄 First time disassembling the bikes for the train
    ⛰️ Most climbing in a day & steepest mountain climbed (800+ m / cat 3)
⚙️ First major field repair (chain twisted and had to convert to a single speed)

    Takeaways:
🧦 Bring extra dry socks (it was colder and wetter than we had planned on)

  22. From Salisbury, I walked out of town and took the Portway, part of a Roman road later used as a Medieval track, up to Old Sarum, the original ancient settlement of the area.

It was lined with berry-laden hawthorn, blackberries past their best, rosehips, and flowering ivy, and humming with insect life, but I didn't see another person on it.

  27. @archaeohistories
Any ideas about the change in the size of the flagstones from the near foreground to further away?

    Was there an intersection?

  32. This is my favourite part of Grovely Wood - 2 miles of beech avenue escorting a former Roman road. It completely captivated me the first time* I walked out into it - an inexplicable sense of the old trees acting as sentinels, waiting, watching and bearing witness.

*I took this photo a few weeks later. No photos at the time of first encounter; I was absorbed in looking and didn't want the mediation of a glass rectangle.

  33. I see Cows of Mastodon and Sheep of Mastodon, but is there any place for ? These are part of the wild population, taken on Dere Street, the running deep through the hills.
