It's a well-known fact that English native speakers have an unfair advantage in academia and I am well aware that I have very much benefited from this. This week I'm getting a taste of what it's like to work in an L2 (actually more like L3 for me) as I'm taking part in a blended intensive programme funded by Erasmus+ on Spanish corpus linguistics taught... in Spanish! Mañana será la primera vez que doy clase en español y no tengo nada de miedo... 🫠

We invite submissions from all subdisciplines of #linguistics and related fields and explicitly welcome submissions from qualitative researchers, ECRs, and work-in-progress (the latter as posters). So far, we have received a range of very promising abstracts, including reports of #replication attempts, the use of LLMs in linguistics research, and teaching initiatives, as well as larger methodological frameworks and more fundamental metascientific questions, which is very exciting!

Yesterday afternoon I led a three-hour workshop on LLMs for my colleagues from the Department of Romance Studies. I have a lot of teaching experience in all kinds of contexts, but this was possibly the scariest experience so far: in a small room by 30°C, packed with almost all professors of the institute, as well as lecturers and post-docs, a mix of linguists and literature and cultural studies scholars, some (possibly most?) with very different experiences and opinions on #GenAI than me, plus I had to teach in German, but it went remarkably well. Lots of positive feedback at the end, people looking forward to Part 2, and this morning a thank-you mail for a colleague who I know is a very heavy user of #ChatGPT who writes that the workshop has given them lots of food for thought.
