  1. Scripture

Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone.

    Colossians 4:5–6

    Reading

Now, an explanation of my long silence. Of course, it is not just a lack of time. When it is absolutely necessary, I always take the time to write. And I would always take it for you if something could come of it for you. However, I have come to doubt that. The last letter showed me that currently it does not make any sense to speak about my inner concerns. Do not consider that an accusation against you. Certainly, the greatest part of the guilt lies with me for, probably, I began the letter rather undiplomatically. Presumably, it would have gone better if we could have spoken about it all. So, we are both missing the concrete awareness of the emotional situation that would be required for a meaningful discussion.

    accompany us and all people
in every distress of body and soul.

  2. Scripture

But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

    1 Peter 3:14–16

    Reading

Have you ever once considered how to explain the fact that men like Augustine, Anselm of Canterbury, Bonaventure, Thomas [Aquinas]—not to mention the thousands whose names are unknown to those who have no connection to them but who without doubt were no less intelligent than us enlightened folk—that these men have seen in the despised dogma the highest that is available to the human mind and the one thing that deserves the sacrifice of life? With what justification are you able to designate the great teachers and the great holy ones of the Church as either idiots or clever defrauders? Certainly one may pronounce such an outrageous suspicion, as each of these words suggests, only after the most thorough examination of all of the facts that come into consideration. Do you not want once and for all objectively to answer these questions, if not for yourself, then for me? Just answer them! You do not have to answer them for me if you do not want to.

  4. Scripture

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

    1 Corinthians 1:20–25

    Reading

I refer to your comment about “the control of the masses with a body of made-up dogma.” Do not take that as a personal reproach. Such a view is entirely typical of intellectuals insofar as they have not been brought up in the Church, and up until a few years ago, it would have been no different for me.

  5. Scripture

Show yourself in all respects a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, and sound speech that cannot be censured; then any opponent will be put to shame, having nothing evil to say of us.

So, now I come to a very serious undertaking in my attempt to answer your letter. When I read over the last few lines, I asked myself how it is possible for a person with academic training, who makes a claim for strict objectivity, and without a thorough investigation would never make a judgment on the smallest philosophical question, to dismiss one of the most important problems with a phrase that reminds me of something that might appear in a hick newspaper.

  6. Scripture

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

    Colossians 3:15–17

    Reading

The spiritual level [at St. Magdalena Convent school] is incomparable with what you encounter in schools on the outside. The candidates for the convent are already carefully selected, and for the seminar the very best of the candidates are sought out and educated. The main thing for me, of course, is the religious basis of the entire life.

  8. Scripture

Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.

I am now employed there [St. Magdalena School, Speyer] and have four classes teaching German and one class in history. For a little second job, I started a philosophical course for the sisters of the college and, after a while, also a class in Latin for two young sisters who were going to take the university entrance exams. 9. Scripture

For thus says the Lord: Only when Babylon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.

    Reading

Around Easter [1923], unexpectedly, I received an offer from a school in Speyer. When my mother overcame her aversion to it, at least to a degree, I quickly accepted. What to my mother was an alarming catch was for me precisely the main point of attraction: the fact that it was a really old Dominican convent [St. Magdalena, Speyer] with which are affiliated quite a large number of educational institutions, among others, the Catholic education establishment for women in the Rhineland Palatinate.

The letters from Saint Edith Stein to Dr. Roman Ingarden in 1924 offer a rich tapestry of spiritual and intellectual engagement, reflecting their deep relationship. Dr. Roman Ingarden, a distinguished Polish philosopher and phenomenologist, shared a great bond of friendship and intellectual camaraderie with Edith. Their correspondence reveals mutual respect and a shared passion for the pursuit of truth, blending rigorous philosophical inquiry with spiritual depth.

In her letters, Saint Edith discusses her life at St. Magdalena’s Dominican convent school in Speyer, expressing the joy and fulfillment she finds in her teaching vocation. NOVENA PRAYER

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross,
called from the people of the Old Covenant,
help us to live together in peace and
    to foster reconciliation between peoples and religions;
graced with the freedom of the spirit,
be close to all who seek the meaning of their lives,
the truth, and deliverance from all bondage.

    (here mention your intentions)

Perfected in the wisdom of the Cross,
    accompany us and all people
in every distress of body and soul.

    Our Father…
    Hail Mary…
    Glory be…

Saint Edith Stein, pray for us.
