Moscovitz went on a tear of copyrighting Romanian klezmer dances in 1925 (this list corresponds to the scores in my blog post above). I had been confused why he was copyrighting them if they were never recorded, but now it makes sense that it was a music publication thing, or at least aspirationally.

I haven't tried playing them yet, but I thought I should make a post about the "original compositions" in the Al Glaser collection at YIVO. Whether or not they're really his, it's a numbered set that appears in several different versions in his collection, and obviously held some importance to him!🤔

🎶🤨every year by the time I think to try and make a choral arrangement of this Moishe Oysher song it's too late. my choir has basically sung the same songs in our Hanukkah concerts year after year probably for decades😂I should really start on it now. Although I think some years what holds me back is that I have already brought 2 Moishe Oysher songs to my choir since 2018.

A #klezmer tune I've been listening on repeat the last few days which is a lot of fun is this (mostly) major key fast bulgar with a distinctly #Romanian feel by Harry Beckerman's "Metronome" orchestra.

Love the whimsy and especially the crescendo building up before the A section repeats. Haven't heard this tune played by any klezmer revivalists yet.

Finally managed to listen to the CD that came with the above book - I only have a cd drive on my computer on campus nowadays. Lot of great field recordings but one of the most fun revelations for me was the playing of Joszef Buta, a Transylvanian #cimbalom player. When I looked him up on youtube I realized I'd seen this old field videos of him before. Great stuff.

I made a table trying to connect his music manuscripts to commercial #78rpm recordings by Hochman's various groups in the 1910s and 20s.

I'm a sucker for old kitschy illustrations of folk dancing. This was from a 1908 book of folk melodies in the Romanian National Library's digital collection. In the lower right we can see two musicians playing small cimbaloms (Țambal mic) and above them a violinist and player of the cobza (a kind of lute).

Marketed as Romanian, played in a smooth American radio orchestra style, the fast dance that follows the Doina is common in Klezmer, Romanian and (I think) Ukrainian music, played in a kind of non specific style😅 🎶

among my batch of US Library of Congress #klezmer & #Romanian music scores I got last month, Max Leibowitz cribbing a bit from the old country yet again*😆I had already come across this Nunta ţărănească medley on the Romanian National Library digital collection while investigating Joseph Moskowitz's repertoire last year, because he recorded it on cimbalom too. At least Max didn't say "Composed by..." in this case...

#Romanian or #Moldovan music folks, help me out if you are out there, does this mode or scale (very common in your folk music) have a particular name or names in Romanian? I'm trying to rewrite the crap wikipedia article about it from a more cross-cultural perspective and this aspect is defeating my keyword searches. I know it in a Jewish context as Mi Sheberach, altered dorian or Ukrainian dorian.

Niche folkloric post, but if someone wants a PDF of a 1908 collection of Romanian folk tunes ... I wanted to print it from the Romanian national library but they had it as a series of image files. I merged it into one file to make it easier to print. Missing a page or two that wouldn't load in their file system and I skipped the blank pages because it's so big.

My other favourite part of this programme that I had seen a clip of before is Maria Dragan singing this piece. She was also an excellent Moldovan folk singer from Moldova whose career was cut short by tuberculosis.
