#WritersCoffeeClub Ch 2 Nbr 16 — How do you feel about flashbacks? Do you use them? /Guess./
I was looking through my October Pages file where I keep all the writing prompts I've answered, amazed at my current output. 16,000 words so far this month. Then I thought back to November of last year...
I'd spent almost a month noodgying my open source Linuxy friend in /Missourah/ about creating an online presence. He had been talking about this thing called "Masto... Don? For all I knew, it had tusks. Actually, he had been noodgying me, so... finally... I said, "Let's do this."
He talked about "instances" and things that went swoosh over my head, but I tried. Every time I picked one sounding creative or authorial, I got, /Sorry, we're not accepting new accounts now./ Eventually, he invited me to his favorite instance. With a name like "Eldritch" and lots of French speakers, it sounded fun and appropriate for an SF writer. I still got all sorts of confused, but people saw I was a newbie and were helpful, and that was nice. I quickly learned about following people, using hashtags people followed, and followed those hashtags. I started telling about my life as a (somewhat autistic) writer, and what it felt like to burn out and come back.
Eventually, I stumbled into hashtags like #WritingWonders and #RomanceWonders, then new ones like #PennedPossibilities and #WritersCoffeeClub, not to mention #Writever which is costing me on average two hours a day, attempting to write new 800 word stories—31 of them.
Today, I can barely remember my life without Mastodon. I've learned so much, felt so supported, and gotten my short writing so together. I don't wanna ever go back.

#RomanceWonders for February 19: Start with a character & design a partner to fit, or start with two characters & figure out how to make them fall in love?
It depends on the book. In book 1, the two characters were crafted to fit a plot idea and each other, then the hero of book 2 existed from book 1 and I had to figure out who could love him and be what he needed. For my current WIP, book 3, both characters existed as best friends before I realized they belonged together.

#RomanceWonders for February 17 and 18 (catching up!): Do they want to get married? / Do they live happily ever after?
Yes and yes. It's really hard to elaborate on this one without major spoilers, so I'll just leave it at that.

#RomanceWonders for February 16: How important is sex to your couple? Also, what's your WIP's heat level?
Kimmy likes sex, and while she thinks "vanilla is a very good flavor too," she prefers a submissive role in bed and her needs are most deeply met through kink.
Dice doesn't feel arousal with strangers so sex hasn't been as easy for him as for his bandmates.
Sex is a key part of their emotional intimacy.
My books are usually medium steam, but this one leans into more heat.

#RomanceWonders: Day 16 — Feb 16: Sex
Gosh! So hard to answer these and make it entertaining, too. I'll try...How important is sex to your couple?
These characters are as incredibly complex as they are broken. She has two love interests, and I won't go on about the alternative ones who'd be ready instantly given the signal, one who has a crush on her, one her former soulmate. She never takes half-measures, is willing to be physically and inappropriately close, and has a certain snarky eloquence that transcends innuendo. No one doesn't understand what she wants. That said, when you know the exact number of days to the end of the world, many things are unimportant. She's said:
#excerpt
"Attraction isn't love. It's like needing to eat. Everyone needs to. You do it, satisfy the hunger— you get hungry again.#excerpt
"The woman, too? Very sneaky. The two of you?"
"Consensual."
"Legal definitions and prosecutors might disagree. The woman. Huh?"
"Skin and nerves. They all function the same." I shrugged. "It's meaningless. Occasionally, I have an urge to pee, too."Also, what's your WIP's heat level?
Sex unmistakably happens. Mostly it's innuendo and double entendres, and the fact she likes to use kissing as a dominance maneuver. Well, there was that time he grabbed her from the candle-lit tub where he carried her all wet to the bed, dripping suds. She likes sweat. Of course, waking up in his bed with his arms and legs hugging her tightly was warm and cozy, but less so when her limbs had fallen asleep.
"You and Kurv," I asked my roommate, almost in a whisper. I'd pushed him her way, despite her vulnerability and his having a crush on me. I hadn't expected them to spend a day in bed.
She chuckled. "I like the guy."
I took a deep breath—but she interrupted whatever my emotions might blurt without thinking, to say, "Yet, when your guy always has some other woman on his tongue, you realize he's probably not fully into you."
She suddenly blushed beet red, backing away, realizing she'd innocently pronounced two double-entendres in a row. "Oh, no. Oh, no!"What was this?
Both had been there for me. Both had opened up in dramatic ways to me. Me?
Eyes closed, it came to me. I remembered both nights. One freely gave me what I wanted and the other gave me what I didn't know I needed. Equal but different.
I had no desire to choose between them.#fantasy #fiction #allusion #innuendo

#RomanceWonders for February 15: Who opens stuck jars in their relationship?
They both do. Both are drummers, both have strong hands. Kimmy is petite but works smart so she'd know the turn-it-upside-down-and-slam-it-on-the-counter trick, and she would not be asking anyone for help. In fact, she probably taught Dice that trick at some point in case he came across any stuck jars.

#WritingWonders: Day 15 — Describe your MC's current mood like the weather.
This is #experimental. Forgive the insanity.
Thunderhead cells... isolated, drifting across a desert afternoon.
The desert.
Is.
Sunny. Hot.
Definitely. But suddenly drenched. I feel rain's embrace before her passion batters me with hail, showing no mercy no quarter no gentle gale until I submit to her will, her desire. Until I relent, becoming hers. Windblown. Lofted skyward. Thrown.
Shocking as roaring lightning, she blinds me. Wet with expectation and emotions she cannot yet understand, she wrings me dry, again. Hot sun steams the life from the golden sands beneath me, again, where, again, I lay, discarded.
Yet.
A shadow. Blustery winds presage the shish of approaching showers. Ozone stings my nose, a prophecy electric.
She's here.
For me.
The next unavoidable thunderhead. Dragging a twister like a war-chipped sword behind, tracking me, to finish me off.
I let it. Nature has her soul. It foments a tempest in my heart alone.

#RomanceWonders for February 14: What was their first date? Did it go well?
They're on a progression from friends to friends-with-benefits to publicly-dating-for-reasons to admitting they're in love.
While they're still just FWB, he says: “It’ll be Valentine’s Day. I know we aren’t — I mean, not really, but — I… would you let me take you out somewhere? Just the two of us?”
It involves a rooftop picnic, a teddy bear, balloons, and chocolate-dipped strawberries.

#RomanceWonders for February 13: Can/do they wear each others' clothes?
Kimmy and Dice have a significant size difference — she's 5'2" and he's 6'3" — so her clothes would be pretty much useless to him. She likes his hoodies, though.
“She wore one of his hoodies, big enough to engulf her and thoroughly cover her sleep shorts and more, and he’d pulled on the same shorts he’d been wearing before and a tropical-print shirt that he hadn’t bothered to button.”

#RomanceWonders for February 12: Introduce your characters. How did they meet?
Dice is a rock star drummer. At the time my WIP takes place, Kimmy is his drum tech and they have been best friends since they met 6 years before.
The opening chapter includes a flashback to that meeting, outside a stage door at the back of a theater where Kimmy had been waiting to see if she could get the band to sign her t-shirt.
