  1. #WhatchaReading ? I finished A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel. Too much page time to horrible speeches from horrible people, but the ending is extremely satisfying and has one of the best declarations of love ever.

  2. #WhatchaReading ? I listened to Codename Charming, which I liked a fair bit more than Battle Royal, although I don't think the audiobook did it a lot of favors. (It was good enough to keep listening to, but the MMC's voice wasn't great.) The hero is a Mountain, which I always love.

Also read Ten Things I Hate About the Duke, which I thought had some plotting issues, but Chase always does such great relationships and interactions.

  3. #WhatchaReading? I #AmReading His Forgotten Bride by Aydra Richards, an amnesia story, yay!. My third by her and I'm really enjoying them; nice to be able to read historical romance again. She's kind of old fashioned but not Old Skool, if that makes sense.

  4. #WhatchaReading ? I finally, finally #JustFinished Mortal Follies, a book much longer and twee-er than it needs to be, though the sticking point for me, unlike most critics, was not the omniscient narrator Puck but the absolutely unnecessary and unbearable Miss Bickle. Cut her completely out and you'd be left with quite an interesting story. I did enjoy the dark and brooding heroine.

  5. #WhatchaReading ? I #JustFinishedReading Strange Love by Ann Aguirre and it was the cutest "alien abduction meets The Hunger Games" story ever. 😂 The alien MMC is an adorable cinnamon-roll-in-an-exoskeleton and the sex scenes are so genuinely weird yet somehow also sexy!

  6. #WhatchaReading ? , Though only published in 2018, Lights and Sirens by Lisa Henry has sadly aged like milk, at least for this American. A cop throwing his weight around, even to protect his boyfriend, does not fly. There's an interesting arc for the other MMC, a paramedic who's mentally overloaded by too many horrific accidents, but it's all kind of brushed over in the end, and the romance also happens way too quickly.

  7. #WhatchaReading ? I was somewhat bogged down in Light Up the Lamp by Kit Irving but enjoyed it by the end. The main character is as thick as a brick, but he figures it all out eventually. 😁

Still listening to Mortal Follies but though the narration is very engaging I'm somehow not really engaged. Dunno if I'm up for another 5 hours of it.

  8. #WhatchaReading ? I'm halfway through the audio of Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall and what seems to be the big climactic moment has happened. Is there going to be five hours just of people having sex now?

  9. #WhatchaReading ? I'm a third of the way into Love & Other Disasters and am a bit disappointed that the assigned-sex-at-birth of the non-binary character has been revealed. I was curious, sure, but also thought it was kind of cool not to know.

It's not really my cuppa -- heavy on the accident/humiliation humor. Cute characters though.

  10. #WhatchaReading ? I finished Small Miracles by Olivia Atwater, whose main character is a fallen guardian angel that switches genders at the drop of a hat and my book tagging system is now in complete disarray. 😂

The author mentions Good Omens inspiration but surely The Good Place was in the mix too? Fun, cute story, with some serious overtones.

  11. #WhatchaReading ? I finished Happy Place and wound up really liking it. There's a lot about friendship as well as romance and the breakdown in the relationship(s) is well drawn.

These "two people who obviously still love each other" romances make me so sad though! I hate the flashbacks because I just want them to be reunited and happy again stat!

  12. #WhatchaReading ? I started Happy Place and am wishing I'd read it in my own happy place, at camp, instead of during after vacation nothing-to-do-but-put-stuff-away blahs.

I'm not finding Wyn remotely attractive, which is making it difficult to read about every little twitch of his face. I hope that'll improve or I'll probably have to DNF.

  13. #WhatchaReading ? I read Waylaid by Sarina Bowen, an author I generally like but who not infrequently makes me go WHUT big time.

I really liked Rickie whose cockiness goes hand-in-hand with a sort of effortless cool that made it work for me. He's pansexual but specifically heteroromantic, which I don't think I've seen in a romance before. And I really got how messed up and sick of himself he feels. Tell me about it, my dude.

  14. #WhatchaReading ? I finished Business or Pleasure after about 2 weeks. 🤨 I liked the characters but I've always had a dislike for romances featuring sex lessons and this didn't change my mind. And I'm kind of skeptical about how effective it is? Seems to me it would make someone very self-conscious.

Now reading Funny Guy and irked because, if your book actually acknowledges the pandemic, shouldn't your character at least test when she gets sick? How irresponsible is that?!

  15. #WhatchaReading ? I finished Wicked All Night, which was a good conclusion to the "Night Rebel" series, except it irked me how all the bad guys kept using the same trick and they always fell for it! (What is that a quote from? Buffy?)

I realized this series was working for me because Veritas cares about people. I had to stop reading the Vlad books because he'd casually incinerate someone for being annoying and his gal would just shrug and say "oh, well, that's Vlad for you!"

  16. #WhatchaReading ? I did the "switch between print and audio" thing for the first time with Ex Appeal by Cathy Yardley and found it pretty workable. (Though it's going to screw with my tagging system. 😁 ) Didn't love the audio, found the voices on the robotic side.

I have a hate for stories featuring people who are martyrs to their family but I managed to get past it and enjoy this.

  17. #WhatchaReading ? I finished Romantic Comedy and thought it a very entertaining, sweet and funny romance, but can't help but feel aggravated at how much attention and praise she's gotten for writing a book no better than many romance authors have written dozens of times already. Ah well.

  18. #WhatchaReading ? I'm in Something Wild and Wonderful by Anita Kelly, which I definitely like, but perhaps wasn't the best choice so soon after We Could Be So Good, since its a kind of similarly quiet, couple-focused read.

Also listening to Mortal Follies, which is pretty amusing.

  20. #WhatchaReading besides bird site drama and hilarity?

After finding her last a bit meh, I'm happy to have just loved We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian, definitely my current top contender for Best Romance of 2023. There's something magical about the prose; it's mainly two people just adoring the fuck out of each other, but it never gets dull or cloying. There's also immersive 1950s atmosphere and important personal arcs but mostly, it's the adoring.
