  1. @TrashBoatDaGod Jisho.org's #romaji tag is great. Chase Colburn's Kanji Study app isn't exactly a dictionary per se but it does have a dictionary function, plus you can turn on romaji and word spacing (eg リンゴ を 食べました instead of リンゴを食べました to make it easier to tell where words begin/end)

  12. His & Hers #MacBookKeyboard photos. Colour is naturally a personal choice, but Japanese spouse wanted the UK layout (familiarity from working here with the Apple UK layout, versus utility of ABC/kana mode keys when typing in #romaji mode), while I the British partner chose the #Japanese keyboard (for the extra thumb keys, even though my written Japanese is limited). 🇯🇵🇬🇧⌨️🤣

  17. See xahlee.info/kbd/Japan_keyboard for a nice overview of #Japanese #Keyboard layouts (written in English), covering both #Romaji and #Kana based input.

They describe Qwerty Romaji as “the most popular layout used in Japan” but also “the least efficient method and layout”. Sounds rather like Qwerty for English!

  22. I was trying to revise my #Kanji with #Wanikani, but I've ended up #YakShaving and have actually spent more time recently thinking about #Romaji, reading up on #JapaneseLanguage entry methods, and filing documentation bug reports on alternative keyboard layouts and a Linux IME that I don't even use (yet?)

  27. Discovered a #romaji Easter Egg which would please #vim fans: The #JapaenseLanguage IME will map zh, zj, zk, and zl to ←,↑,↑,→ in homage to classic #HJKL cursor input.

  30. @sleepytako So taking your example, in #romaji input mode we type the English letters turuhasi or (tsuruhashi in Hepburn style) which becomes つるはし and IME software on the computer should suggest the kanji 鶴橋 (and perhaps even the emoji ⛏️).

I want the “t” key to also be labeled with た meaning たちつてと, and the “u” key should also be labeled う, and the “r” key should also be labeled ら meaning らりるれろ, and so on.

  33. #JapaneseKeyboard question: Does anywhere sell off-the-shelf (rather than custom order) #KeyCaps labelled with the #Romaji rather than JIS Kana layout (which I don't use)?

    i.e. Not: Q/た W/て E/い R/す T/か Y/ん …

    I want the Romaji #Hiragana labels: Q W/わ E/え R/ら T/た Y/や …

    Or, the Romaji #Katakana: Q W/ワ E/エ R/ラ T/タ Y/ヤ …

Maybe even both. Keys not used for Romaji like C, J, Q would have just the letter. And for X and L (prefix for little), maybe X/小?

  43. Writing macrons (e.g. Āā) is a PITA if you use a JIS keyboard. It's easier on Linux and Mac but ALT codes on my Win machine at work didn't work. So I figured out a workaround this morning then wrote a how-to for it.
