    Rolling Stones - Dirty Work

I pulled this one out after yesterday's #JukeboxFridayNight
The Stones' 12th studio album is not one of their best. The long standing musical differences between Jagger and Richards had deteriorated to personal animosity, to the extent that the various band members were rarely in the recording studio at the same time.
The album is notable as the last appearance of founding member, pianist Ian Stewart, who had been pushed out of the band in 1963 but who nonetheless continued to collaborate closely.

  6. “Anyone can get old, all you have to do is live long enough”*…

When records began in 1963 there were only 153 centenarians in Japan – now there are 107,677…

The number of people aged 100 or more in Japan has exceeded 100,000 for the first time, according to the health ministry.

Figures show Japan is now home to 107,677 centenarians, the highest number in the world, of whom 88% are women. The oldest woman is Kishimoto Fuyo, a 114-year-old from Kyoto City and the oldest man is Kato Hikaru, a 112-year-old from Kumamoto.

Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno said he was “delighted that so many people are living long, healthy and active lives”, citing progress in medicine and technology.

But Kenichiro also warned of the challenge the country faces in maintaining a sustainable social security system.

Experts put the long lives of the Japanese down to several factors, including a healthy diet and an active lifestyle.

The island nation’s cuisine predominantly consists of fish, vegetables, and rice – and less saturated fat than many Western diets.

Older people also regularly walk, use public transport, cycle and stretch.

Japan has been aging for years and sales of adult nappies have been higher than those for babies for more than a decade…

… Residents aged 65 and older currently make up around 30% of the population and are expected to make up nearly 40% by 2070.

Japanese authorities have called the trend an “existential crisis” with Prime Minister Sanae Takichi describing the decline as a “quiet emergency”.

In 2025 Japan’s total population decreased in all 47 prefectures but two, and the rate of decline is accelerating.

The government’s many programmes and subsidies to encourage young people to have more children do not appear to be boosting birth rates.

Experts say the reasons are complex, ranging from lower marriage rates and more women joining the workforce to the increased costs of raising children.

While immigration has risen in previous years, foreigners only make up around 3% of the population and opposition to accepting more has grown…

“More than 100,000 people in Japan are now aged 100 or older,” from @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social

As we age, we might recall that it was on this date in 1964 that “Time Is on My Side,” written by Jerry Ragovoy and originally recorded by jazz trombonist Kai Winding and his Orchestra in 1963, was released as a single by The Rolling Stones in the US. (The song had also been released as a B-side by R&B singer Irma Thomas a month before the Stones’ version was issued.) The loosely arranged recording with an organ intro was included on the band’s American LP, 12 X 5, and a more tightly arranged version with a guitar intro was recorded in Chicago later that year and included on their second UK album, The Rolling Stones No. 2.

  11. Stumbled on this post in a vintage Boston group. I think folks here will enjoy this...

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    Boston, July 18, 1972.

The Rolling Stones were supposed to play the Boston Garden that night. Fifteen thousand people were already inside, waiting for Mick, Keith and the boys to show up. Only problem was, the Stones weren't anywhere near Boston. Fog had forced their plane to land at T.F. Green in Rhode Island, and while they were waiting to get out of there, an altercation with police ended with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and three others getting hauled off to jail. Meanwhile, back at the Garden, 15,000 people were sitting around wondering what the hell was going on.

Stevie Wonder kept playing to buy some time, but everybody knew nobody had come to the Garden that night just to see Stevie. Boston was also dealing with trouble in the South End, so Mayor Kevin White had a decision to make. He needed his cops in the streets, but he also had a Garden full of angry Stones fans who had been waiting all night. So White went down there himself and started making calls. Somehow he got the Stones sprung from the Rhode Island lockup on $50 bail and into his personal custody.

Then the mayor walked onto the Garden stage, sleeves rolled up and tie loosened, and told 15,000 people, “The Stones have been busted, but I have sprung them!” The place went nuts. White arranged for the MBTA to stay open late, kept the crowd occupied while the Stones headed north with a police escort, and at one point was even throwing a football into the stands. You couldn't make this stuff up.

The Stones finally hit the Garden stage around 12:45 in the morning and played until after 2. They were hours late, but the crowd was still there. Nobody went home empty-handed, and Boston avoided what could have been one hell of a mess.

That's the kind of Boston story I love. No fancy press conference. No committee meeting. Just Kevin White walking into a packed Garden full of pissed-off people and basically saying, “Relax. They're coming.”

And somehow, the mayor pulled it off.

The Stones played. The crowd went home happy and Boston got one hell of a story.
