  1. It’s disappointing to read that NZ’s fastest growing town, Rolleston, was initially designed in the 1970s to be a much nicer place:

“Aware of the social and environmental pitfalls of car dependency, the plans encouraged walking, cycling and public transport - potentially capitalising on Rolleston's origins as a railway junction. The plans also emphasised the importance of creating a wide range of industry and employment in the town.”

Instead, those plans were all scrapped by Muldoon’s National government and we got the sprawling, car-infested mess that Rolleston is now, where over half the residents drive to Christchurch to work each day.

  2. #Rolleston started out as a railway town in 1866. It's grown hugely to ≈28,000 people. It's 20 minutes by train to #Christchurch Station in the largest city in Australasia without urban rail. $125 millionis being spent on local transport improvements, none of which is going to passenger rail. At a minimum, an amenity upgrade for the station, used by the existing Tranz Alpine train, would have been in order.
