I tried running a few back in the day, but new got it properly off the ground. I just wish someone would run a campaign just for me.

  6. Rivers of London: Murder, Brutalism, and Cheeky Nandos

This is part four of a series exploring the source material from The Rivers of London novels by Ben Aaronovitch which has given rise to a charming RPG from Chaosium. This series explores inspirations for and attitudes about playing the game, hoping to encourage gamers to look past the expectations of typical urban fantasy and police procedurals to find the beautiful and moving moments of something much deeper. It would be nice too, if readers who have not yet tried a roleplaying game but love the series, could be enticed by this series to give it a try. The world you love in the books can come to life in your own play. It's a kind of magic.

  17. Rivers of London: ‘Tis the Season for Novellas

This is part three of a series exploring the source material from The Rivers of London novels by Ben Aaronovitch which inspired and supports a streamlined BRP roleplaying game by Chaosium. The motivation behind the series is to explore approaches to playing the game, and to acknowledge and inspire gamers to look past the upbeat and humorous writing, punctuated by police procedure and magical action, to find the beautiful and moving moments of perhaps unexpected potency which make the books stand out. The combination, if grasped and brought into a game, is killer.

  27. That Chronicles It!!

Every character in tabletop role playing games (TTRPGs) will possess some form of history. While only those who are the most prominent to the game will get it featured in some manner, those less-important characters will also possess one. These games will possess characters of different importance. The lowest will be the one-time characters who only appear for the scene up to the story important player characters (PCs). Through understanding their history, every character will seem more real to everyone.

    Before

There will always be something that happens to someone before they appear in the story. This is referred to as their backstory. How does this backstory impact the current situation? What values have been developed? These questions will have some impact upon the character they are today. Something as minor as being a wanderer will show their values. The wanderer will explain why they are in this location today and another tomorrow. Character problems will also be important. Having agoraphobia would explain why they are rarely outside and when they are they will have problems with everything they perform. No matter what is in this backstory will have some effect upon the character in the current game.

    Action Time!

People will desire to have their current actions documented. This will especially be true if those actions will be considered important or they see themselves as highly valued. Since the game deals with events that are actually happening, everyone will be influencing what others are performing. This could be something minor, such as choosing door two instead of door one. That impact will prove essentially unimportant since what is on the other side can be made by the game master (GM) to suit the situation and narrative rather than being set in stone. Those actions could have strong impact, such as determining what adventure is chosen by the PCs.

    What Next?!

The actions that are being taken will have some impact upon how someone will develop over time. If someone with agoraphobia is forced to spend considerable time outside, they could reduce or eliminate that phobia. That wanderer could be arrested for some crime and forced to live years in this one place. People will never be static. Things in the past created what exist toady. Today’s events will tell someone how and what to develop in the future. Keep in mind how people develop. Phobias never fully disappear, one simply gains control of it. The wanderer might develop a form of control syndrome in that prison.

People’s personalities will be an essential feature with every story. It will not matter if that character appears that one time only or is the big bad evil guy (BBEG) or the PCs. The current game will be built upon events that precede it. What happens currently will determine aspects that will become important in the future. Through keeping this in mine, rich and well-rounded characters will be found in the game. Those characters will then make the exciting story that is retold in the years to come.
