Toward Predicting Rogue Waves
Rogue waves were once the stuff of nautical legend. Tales of giant lone waves were considered sailors’ tall tales, until an oil rig in the North Sea was hit by a 25.6-meter wave on 1 January 1995. The wave was more than twice the height of any others around it and much steeper, too. Since then, scientists have been working to understand how and why these rogue waves form.
A recent study, like many others, attributes rogue waves to the subtle nonlinearities of ocean waves, which don’t match a smooth sinusoid even though they are sometimes modeled that way. When it comes to rogue waves, the sharpness of a wave’s peak and flattening of its trough affect whether waves come together into a lone giant.
The study is based on 18 years worth of wave data collected at an offshore platform in the North Sea. With such an extensive data set, researchers were able to find patterns in the waves that precede the arrival of a rogue wave. That’s an important step toward being able to predict a rogue wave, which would help protect platforms, ships, and personnel. (Image credit: C. Wou; research credit: S. Knobler et al.; via SciAm)

Rogue waves — rare waves much larger than any surrounding waves — have long been a part of sailors’ tales, but their existence has only been confirmed relatively recently. The exact mechanisms behind them are still a matter of debate. Laboratory experiments with mechanically-produced waves have created miniature rogue waves, but we still lack real-world observations of their formation.
To that end, researchers sailed the Southern Ocean, known for its rough waves, during austral winter and observed the state of the wind and waves nearby using stereo cameras. They found that young wind-driven waves tend to be steeper, and they move slower than the wind, as they’re still drawing energy from it. Older waves, in contrast, were shorter, less steep, and less likely have white caps from breaking. Overall, they found that strong winds could more easily drive young waves into the nonlinear growth that leads to rogue waves. (Image credit: S. Baisch; research credit: A. Freak waves cause damage at US army base, shut airports in remote islands
by Giff Johnson
22 January 2024"Powerful waves, driven by offshore storm surges, hit an important US military installation in the #MarshallIslands on Saturday night, causing damage and resulting in the evacuation of all 'non-mission personnel' from the island.
"#Flooding caused by the waves also hit two airports at #AilinglaplapAtoll, leaving rocks, coral and debris in their wake, keeping those airports closed for weeks. Other islands reported flooding and moderate damage.
"The US Army in a statement on Sunday afternoon that at approximately 9pm on January 20, 'a series of #weather-induced waves hit #RoiNamur which caused significant flooding in the northern portions of the island".
"A video circulating from Roi-Namur, an island at the northern end of Kwajalein Atoll, shows an approximately one-metre wave hitting the Army's dining hall, breaking down doors, knocking people down and washing them from outside into the facility."

Eight people taken to hospital as waves up to 30ft high pound California coast
Six million people under high surf warning as powerful storms sweep through #California and #Oregon
by Maanvi Singh in Oakland, California, and Erum Salam
Fri 29 Dec 2023"#GiantWaves as tall as 30ft crashing on to California’s coast have caused injuries and property damage, prompting evacuation warnings.
"At least eight people needed hospital treatment after towering waves crashed over seawalls in southern California on Thursday, engulfing seaside neighborhoods. On Friday, more than 6 million people remained under a high surf warning across California and Oregon. The National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted waves up to 40ft, warning: 'Stay away from rocks, jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. Never turn your back to the ocean!'
"The season’s first huge swell, propelled by #GaleForceWinds across the Pacific Ocean, and a swath of low pressure off the west coast, combined with strong rains along parts of California, have created treacherous conditions. Evacuation orders were issued for Stinson beach in Marin county, north of San Francisco, and for parts of Santa Cruz along the central coast.
"The Los Angeles-area weather office wrote that powerful cyclones over northern Pacific waters were sending 12-17ft (3.6-5-meter) swells, creating 'tremendous wave energy across coastal waters'.
"At some points along California, breaking waves were predicted to reach 25ft (7.6 meters). Astronomical high tides were adding to a significant risk of more coastal flooding, forecasters said.
"'Overall, this is expected to be an exceptional high-surf and coastal #flooding event that has not occurred in many years,' the weather service said. 'Take caution and heed the direction of local authorities and lifeguards. Never ever turn your back to the water as damaging and life-threatening sneaker waves are likely to occur.'
"In the #BayArea region, there is a chance of thunderstorms into Saturday morning, according to the NWS. The weather service office in Medford, Oregon, also expected hazardous beach conditions and gusty winds of 30-50mph on Friday, warning of possible infrastructure damage.
"Surfers and beachgoers in Los Angeles and much of southern California are being warned that the risk of drowning is high, and several beaches and state parks across the state have been closed due to the weather.
"High surf is often a hazard of California winters. During the winter of 2020-2021, several people, including young children, died in the Bay Area after being swept out to sea by unexpectedly strong waves. Officials worry that risks are heightened this holiday weekend, when families often flock to the beach.
"A study this year found that California’s winter waves have gotten taller, and big waves have become more frequent since the 1970s, due to #ClimateChange."

The Bermuda Triangle, a notorious area in the Atlantic Ocean where many ships and planes have disappeared, may have a natural explanation. Scientists have found that the region is prone to rogue waves, which are massive and unpredictable waves that can reach up to 30 meters high. These waves could easily overwhelm and sink vessels without a trace.
