Do you remember how, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, bell‑bottom trousers were just about the only thing you could buy? Even suits came with bell‑bottoms. Some brands tried to soften it by calling them “flares,” but everyone knew what they were. That was simply the way of things. Thinking about it now, I can almost hear a Bee Gees tune drifting in from somewhere. And then, almost overnight, the whole bell‑bottom craze went quiet and vanished. At least that’s how it felt to me. I was a soldier then and mostly lived in uniforms, but I owned a few pieces of civilian clothing. Looking back, the fad was here for a moment and then—poof—gone.

In the 1990s I went to a semi‑formal gathering of Sergeants Major at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The post straddles the Tennessee–Kentucky line, though the post office sits on the Kentucky side. But back to fashion. At that gathering, old suits emerged from closets, and suddenly there they were again: bell‑bottom trousers, wide‑collar shirts, even platform shoes. Small platforms, thankfully—not the kind with goldfish swimming in the soles. It was the natural result of a room full of middle‑aged men who rarely wore civilian clothes, especially the dress‑up kind. They simply reached for whatever was hanging in the closet, unaware that the world had moved on.

Over the decades, bell‑bottoms have resurfaced now and then in women’s fashion, only to fade again. I suppose the fad could return in full force someday. That’s up to the new generations.

City Royals

Here’s one for the pigeon lovers. These two rock pigeons—Columba livia, if you’re feeling scientific—are regulars in my backyard. I call them officers of the pigeon battalion, part of the morning flock that descends on my bird feeders with military precision. If you look closely, you’ll see what I call epaulets on their shoulders—markings that suggest rank, or at least attitude.

The pigeon in the foreground is easy to spot. He’s got a grizzle effect in his plumage, a genetic quirk that gives him those distinctive white patches. Like camouflage, but for a bird who doesn’t bother hiding.

I used to try discouraging their visits. They’d clean out the seed before the songbirds even got a chance. But nothing worked. So I went with the old saying: If you can’t beat them, join them. Now I just salute and let the battalion do its rounds.

No Room for Sharing

My new bird feeder isn’t quite as pigeon-friendly as the old one. At most, it comfortably accommodates four pigeons—two on each side. But when a fifth tries to squeeze into the middle, someone always gets bumped. That’s exactly what happened here: the pigeon on the right ousted its predecessor in a swift territorial shuffle. Even then, peace was short-lived. Instead of settling down to enjoy the cuisine, the two pigeons on that side chose to duke it out, turning mealtime into a feathery feud.

Yesterday morning, while I was out filling the bird feeders, I happened to glance up toward the south and saw a lone pigeon flying as fast as it could in that direction. It wasn’t the first time I’d noticed something like this while tending the feeders. Several minutes later, a hoard of pigeons descended on the backyard. In my imagination, that lone pigeon had spotted the food and rushed off to alert the others—probably heading to Walmart, their usual hangout, which lies in the same direction. I like to think it gathered reinforcements and led them back. I don’t fill the feeders every day, partly to discourage the pigeons and squirrels, foolishly hoping they’ll forget about them.

The coffee is weak this morning, but I suppose weak coffee is still better than none. Maybe I should have topped off the grinder, or perhaps the lack of bite is because I stole a cup before the brew was finished. Hmmm 🤔 there’s a third possibility—one I hope isn't the culprit. I might have absentmindedly used two coffee filters instead of one. It’s happened before, though not in years. Coffee-related mishaps are not to be taken lightly.

Meanwhile, my head is still foggy from waking up, and there’s a deep crease across my forehead from the straps of my CPAP mask. My scalp looks suspiciously like someone could unscrew the top to swap out the batteries.

So today begins with a whimper.

I often call Charlie 'Charlie McGee' or some other variation, in tribute to his Scottish heritage. He's a border collie, after all. Of course, he's completely unaware of all that—except for the 'Charlie' part; he knows his name. When we're out in the yard and he wanders off, all I have to do is call, 'Charlie!' and he comes running around the corner. He’s every bit a working dog, always accompanying me when there’s yard work to do. Though his role is more supervisory—lounging in the shade while I cut the grass or, as I like to say in French, 'mow-de-lawn'—a classic grandpa joke. He does his part well. When he first arrived at our home, he spent much of his time trying to herd us around—must be in his genes.

Do you remember G.I. Joe toys? Introduced by Hasbro in 1964, they were marketed as "action figures" rather than dolls, aimed at boys—kind of like Ken, but on steroids. In the 1980s, the figures shrank to about a quarter of their original size, making them more compatible with playsets and vehicles. The G.I. Joe commercial used the tune of "The Army Goes Rolling Along," the official U.S. Army song, which was adapted in 1956 from the 1908 song "The Caissons Go Rolling Along," written by Brigadier General Edmund L. Gruber while stationed in the Philippines. In the original song, caissons were wheeled ammunition carts used by the Field Artillery. Hasbro’s adaptation of the tune featured the lyrics: "G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe, fighting man from head to toe, on the land, on the sea, in the air!"

This catchy jingle, Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me, has been bouncing around in my head this morning. If you don’t recognize it, it’s a classic tune from the variety show Hee Haw, which aired from 1969 to 1992. I tuned in occasionally, though it was never a favorite of mine—too corny, like a whole show full of grandpa jokes. But this song? Pure genius. A classic, right up there with Bach and Chopin.

May has arrived, and with it, May Day. At first, I thought we didn't really celebrate it here, but then I remembered the annual May festival downtown. My wife has set up a booth a few times to sell her quilting products. Quilts are a tough sell—while beautiful and intricate, they require significant effort to make and can range from a few hundred to a thousand dollars, making them more of an investment than an impulse buy. To appeal to a wider audience, she also showcases smaller items like baby sets and teddy bears. Her sports-themed teddy bears, especially those featuring Saints and LSU fabric, are quite popular. They often come dressed up, adding to their charm and making them a big hit at the festival.

Clash of the Plumage

While Charlie and I sat out back this morning, I watched these two rock pigeons (Columba livia) duke it out around the corner of a bird feeder. The bird on the right, with its left side toward the camera, eventually yielded the bird feeder and hopped to the ground.

I've read that pigeons are sexually dimorphic, but I have trouble telling the sexes apart. Nevertheless, I believe these two are males.

It is the dawn of a new day and here I sit with my feet upon my desk and my keyboard in my lap. I do have coffee. It occurred to me that the only three drinks left in my diet are water, tea, and coffee. Tea and coffee without sugar or sweetener; that is okay, I've been drinking black coffee for decades and unsweetened iced tea is not unfamiliar either. Jack is a dull boy. Oh, I forgot almond and rice milk.

Here's Charlie. I left the bedroom door open last night, and this morning Charlie was at my bedside and six o'clock sharp mumbling and kind of nudging the bed in a failed attempt to wake me without waking my wife. It was my wife who got me moving. It was time to go outside.

Spa Day

This morning, I rinsed out my bird bath and filled it up with cool water. These rock pigeons (Columba livia) decided it was bath time They were pretty possessive of the bath and didn't allow other pigeons to join in.

I saw a list online of photos entitled "What Things Were Like in the 80s," or something like that, and thought: "oh my, were those pictures dug up by some archeologist searching for the truth of the ancient past?" It makes me feel like a visitor from a time long ago, a time traveler who only travels to the future. It's definitely true that I have clothes older that whoever put that piece together. It is an example of "everything being relative." Things that are in my memory are things that younger people can only read about. Afterall, there are 24-year-old people who were born in the 21st century. Hmmm ... my youngest granddaughter starts college this year.

We're taking a short trip today. I'd rather stay at home, so I'm already dragging my feet and nobody else has even gotten out of bed this morning. Do you ever do that when you don't want to do something that you know that you are going to have to do? Another way to describe it is slowing around, like if you procrastinate long enough the thing will go away. It won't work though; I know I must go to keep peace in the family. Hmmm ... did I just rhyme? My best delaying tactic is just not to do anything yet, be quiet as a mouse and let everyone else sleep through the morning.

I'm continuously amazed at what some things are that some people find reasonable. For example, when I was at work a couple of years ago, I found a copy of the tabloid Enquirer on a table, and I picked it up and made a joke by holding it up and saying, "here's the real news while laughing," because tabloids generally are outrageous. Well, my boss, an otherwise smart guy took offense. That is when I realized that he probably brought in into the office. My thoughts were "oh my god, he can't possible think that tabloid is a dependable news source." In that way, people are like books in that you can't tell a book by its cover. You can never tell what lurks underneath that distinguished exterior.

I seldom leave the house to go anywhere early in the morning. But this morning, I got up, got cleaned up, and took our truck for a service. The dealership has started a pickup and delivery service, but I drove in and waited. I was completed quickly, and I drove away. I know, it is a boring story, I'm about to put myself to sleep. But as things go, boring is good when it comes to automobile maintenance. Nobody likes expensive surprises when they take their cars in for a service. We're hitting the road at the end of the week, and I don't want any surprises during the trip. Take care of your car and it will take care of you ... or at least be there when you need it.

When I was in the Army, I never had a pet. The thing was it was hard to care for a pet because we could be stationed at one place for a couple of years and then boom, get transferred to somewhere on the other side of the planet. What do you do with that living breathing being then? Well, the truth is, in some cases you could take a cat or dog with you, though it's difficult. In other cases, it is just not possible, so the dog or cat that has been part of your family for a couple of years gets left behind. When my wife and I ended up where we are, both retired from Army, my wife wanted a couple of puppies, we agreed that we would take care of the properly. One was Ben.
