"Mt. Fuji is made up of layers of volcanic lapillus and is prone to collapse. Also, owing to the unstable stones and rocks scattered around, rain, wind, earthquakes, and human actions can cause large and small rocks to fall"

  4. There was a megatsunami in Lituya Bay in 1958, en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_L . An earthquake caused a massive rockfall into a bay. The impact with the water generated a massive wave with a run up of 520m on the opposing slope. It was a shockingly powerful wave!

It turns out this kind of event is a risk in high latitude mountainous coastlines. The glaciers create steep valleys with fjords. The steep slopes have a high rockfall risk. In Norway, they are doing a mapping program to give warning before such disasters earthmagazine.org/article/comm

  5. Yesterday evening I watched "La Montagne", a film about a man's experiences in the Alps near Chamonix.
Part of the plot involves (in a mystical way) lights emanating from rocks and ice, with unusual results...
However, I have a vague memory that sparks of light can sometimes be an indicator of an imminent rockfall, perhaps in some kind of piezoelectric process; has anyone else come across this?

  6. The end of the road trip?

The culture of 'the drive' requires sisyphean road maintenance, especially in a climate emergency.

Mobile sprawl as a form of 'recreation' eliminates the landscape. It is the annihilation of space and time. Motorists want to get from their door to the spectacle in the fastest way possible. The 'in-between space' viewed through the car window vanishes.

The pleasure cruise from A to B does not just degrade the landscape, but also eradicates possibilities of a livable planet. The overuse by the masses in their fossil fuel boxes makes the hillsides crumble, leads to landslides and erosion. After flash flooding, drought and heatwaves the roads have to be rebuilt over and over again.

Here are three cases of 'scenic drives':
    California, Victoria and NSW

  7. #rockfall yesterday in the Maurienne Valley, french #Alps 🇫🇷, causing the cut of roads to Italy 🇮🇹.

The relation to the permafrost melting, as suggested in the paper, is questionable because of low elevation of the event…
But any impact from the heavy rains of past days?
