🎸🤖 Oh joy, yet another "modern" music player because clearly, the world was one firmware update away from achieving sonic nirvana. Apparently, rehashing #Rockbox with a sprinkle of GitHub buzzword soup was just what the doctor ordered. But hey, at least the navigation menu is impeccable! 🙄🎶

For the other two people out there using Rockbox for the 3DS, if you have noticed that only default theme works, you are not alone.
Most Rockbox themes are built for a structure where the ".rockbox" folder is in the root of the storage and not "/3ds/.rockbox".
This is something easily fixable during config time but if you don't want to rebuild the whole thing for that, you can you use good ol' sed on any themes you have installed.
> sed -i 's|/.rockbox/wps/|/3ds/.rockbox/wps/|g' /3ds/.rockbox/themes/*.cfg
It should work with most themes. Hope I could help a little! #3ds #rockbox -
For what I can only attribute to my phone guzzling down power even with local-only apps for music and podcasts, I, a terminally-online person that is rarely more than 1m away from a PC or smartphone with a constant Internet connection, and even self-host my own services, am considering... stepping down a notch and move to a more... "analog" world.
Actually, analog is the wrong word. "#Disconnected" might be a better one.
So I'm wondering if I could actually make a switch to something like a Nokia 7110 and an #MP3player.
Weirdly enough, MP3 players these days are apparently either cheap and crappy, or expensive and iffy, or VERY expensive, or expensive Android mini tablets with barely any battery life...
So I just put a bid on a modded 120GB iPod Classic I can slap Rockbox on, hopefully I win it.
If anyone in the EU has an #iPod they don't want that's compatible with #rockbox, please let me know!

Just noticed one of my favorite pieces of software ever had a big update after more than 5 years: the #Rockbox media player software! https://www.rockbox.org
I ran this on an old #iPod color, of course, but later on an old #Android phone, a #FiiO M3K and today on a #Surfans F20! Honestly it just can't be beat, software wise, for a media player. 🧵1/2

Well, the iPod is officially a bust, so I must search for other avenues.
My choices of #MP3player / #DAP are then:
- Ultra low-cost machine, with quite possibly VERY crappy sound for under €40;
- Proper DAP that's over €100 with some being able to run #Rockbox as an alternative firmware. Currently eyeing the #HIFIWalkerH2.
- Weirdly enough, some retro consoles like the #R36S and its variants, which can also run Rockbox as an app.
So, Fedi, what say you on this topic? What do you suggest?

Got the 360p version of #Rockbox installed on my #InnioasisY1 with the #AdwaitaPod theme!
Had to change fonts to support Japanese characters, and set new album art because apparently Progressive JPGs aren't supported but now it's pretty much perfect for me ^^

I'd really like a little audio player that can 1) support flac/opus/aac file formats and 2) has a replaceable battery for ~$100, but that doesn't seem to be a thing that exists
anyone know better, fedi?

Rockbox 4.0 released: https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/ReleaseNotes400
(first release in 6 years).
-
picked up a used iPod Mini (2G) and put #rockbox on it in a quest for the simples audiobook mediaplayer for my grandma. I've already disabled all menu items except the tracklist, but I'll have to do a little (two-line) patch to remove the settings menu also. I'd like to also put a much larger font on it, but I'm not sure yet whether that's easy or possible

Getting ready to try and hack my #PSP. New battery and memory card have arrived!
I knew that I had a mini USB cable stashed somewhere, but I had to rummage through a few boxes before I could find it.
Along the way I also found my old Sansa #mp3 player and charging cable. Unfortunately it looks like this one is too old and is unable to run #rockbox
The rubberized back is also pretty nasty but a little isopropyl alcohol should take care of it.
-
definitly the wrong time to take care of track deduplication on my ipod, but whatever. if you use #rockbox you may like this
-
@MyWoolyMastadon You'll definitely want something that's capable of running #Rockbox. See https://www.rockbox.org/.
There's simply no better software for portable media players, if you ask me. And fully open source. I personally have a #Surfans F20, which works great.

Well, it took four days of off and on work, navigating multiple (LLM-generated) guides and forums but I finally managed to get #RockBox loaded on my #Y1 (using the unsupported Linux build of the #Innioasis updater app) and I couldn’t be happier! Makes a fun music device all the better! PLUS I learned a TON about my #Linux system. I feel like I’ve been through the trenches.

@dook You've helped me so much with Rockbox lately, I figured it's my time to give back to the community as a thank you!
I've made a repository of color schemes for Themify 2 that I've been using since the Themify 1 days! Users simply drag and drop these cfg files to their .rockbox/themes folder :)
Are you okay with these config files still having your name in them at the top, or would you prefer your name to be removed? Let me know either way :)

Starting in April, Japan gets stricter regarding violations while cycling.
Using earplugs is forbidden, and I'm out of ideas for alternatives.
I'm using a single earplug to listen to podcasts, with the FiiO M3K player running #rockbox - great device and excellent rockbox support. The canonical idea to become "compliant" is to go for bone conduction headsets - just these are all Bluetooth connected, and Rockbox does not support Bluetooth. Hm..
-
@FreakyFwoof @tuukkao I have always admired #rockbox however I never bought a supported player. Do you know if some supported devices are available these days? -

Awesome #raspberrypi DIY-hack:
RPi-Zero driven MP3 player retro-fitted in an old iPod chassis."projects that showed how to interface with the click-wheel, a perfectly fitting color display from Waveshare, and open-source software called #Rockbox to run on the pi. We all stand on the shoulders of giants."

One of my favorite role-model for #Digital #LongTerm hard+software support:
Rockbox: An awesome #FOSS OS for #MP3 players ( 💌 since 2005)
The project+website is providing firmware, insights & details for portable music player hardware implementations. 🌟

If anyone is interested in "how digital hardware could live long and prosper": #Rockbox is a great example how to do it! Thanks Rockbox-contributors.

Hmmm, since I started toying with self-hosting and local music files, I seem to have started having fun with listening to music again.
I'm a dirty little noobie and have no clue what I'm doing, but lowering the semitone to somewhere between -2 to -5 on some tracks from the #FastNEO OST and playing with some bass/trebble is just so much fun! Now if I could only find some reverb or echo in #RockBox

WTF moment of the day:
I plug my Sansa Clip+ (portable music player) with #RockBox on it via USB to my laptop.
I click the home button on the Sansa Clip+ …
… on my laptop’s screen a menu pops up 🤨
I try it again – same thing!
It turns out it mimicks a USB mouse and you can use the d-pad to move the cursor and have both a LBM and RMB, with volume rocker as scroll wheel 🤯
OK, it turns with the power button you can switch between Mouse, Multimedia, Presentation and Browser keys modes 🤯🤯

I went through quite a time trying to get my 2007 #iPod to play nice with my linux PCs, and ultimately was unsuccessful with the 'sync with my device but use Rhythmbox/Amarok/Strawberry' approach. Reformatted many times and got messages that it was synched, but the device would always show '0 songs'.
Eventually I found #RockBox, a standalone bootloader and OS that can be loaded on top of the existing iPod OS.This renewed my motivation to keep going... Attempts to install using the Linux AppImage kept giving SSL handshake errors, and I nearly gave up again. I tried one last time using the wife's Windows PC, and it worked great, and I'm now able to load stuff on there with a simple disk mount > drag & drop process on my Fedora laptop.
The experience using Rockbox is great - slightly frustrating navigating on a tiny screen, but that's only because there are so many options and menus since the feature list is so long. I'd rather it be feature heavy over requiring the user to use a pc-connection to take actions.
Unfortunately, the battery seems to be very near end-of-life, because it gave only a couple of hours of play on a full charge. Next step will be opening the unit and dropping in a replacement battery. I do wonder if the software is a little bit more power-hungry due to the additional features. -
It seems #ListenBrainz might be what I am looking for. Will feed it some nonsense through the Android app and see how the recommendations work.
I hope scrobbling from dedicated music players (e.g. using #RockBox firmware) and bidirectional integrations into desktop apps will work as well as from the phone soon.
If anyone is interested, this is me now:

At the start of the year, a neighbor was giving away a Sansa clip+ audio player, and I thought it would be nice to have a standalone device again. The clip+ runs #Rockbox, takes microSD cards in addition to 8 GB of internal storage, supports the normal audio formats and -- looking at this list (https://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-sansaclipplus/rockbox-buildap2.html#x19-402000B) -- even numerous video game soundtrack files.
I only just discovered that, when it's connected to a computer to transfer files, it turns into a USB multimedia controller, too.

Every icon has been redesigned on #Inkscape now, every asset like the buttons or sliders or rounded corners as well has been redone. #ImageMagick and #GIMP were used too because #BMP files are kind of a pain.
I always end up thinkering way too much with #theming my devices. But this one was specially fun. There's still some rough edges, and it's barely noticeable at all for anyone else but, yeah.
As always, many icons were borrowed from #Arcticons!
