"Local campaign group United Against Racism have announced an incredible lineup for their 'Rock Against Racism' event.

The gig will be dedicated to the memory of Derry musician, activist and lifelong anti-racist, Colm Bryce who sadly passed away a few months ago.

A spokesperson for the group explained the history of Rock Against Racism and why it is still relevant today: 'Rock Against Racism was a political and cultural movement which emerged in 1976 in reaction to a rise in racist attacks on the streets of Britain and increasing support for the far-right National Front at the ballot box.

Between 1976 and 1982, RAR activists organised national carnivals and tours, as well as local gigs and clubs throughout the country.

    (. . .)

Just like in 1976, people are getting angry and fighting back.'"

  10. On 30 April 1978, 100,000 people marched six miles from Trafalgar Square to the East End of London (a National Front hotspot) for an open-air concert at Victoria Park in Hackney. The concert featured The Clash, Steel Pulse, Tom Robinson Band, X-Ray Spex, Jimmy Pursey (from Sham 69), and Patrik Fitzgerald.

  11. A reason for #hope. I was at a UK secondary school in the 70s and remember #RockAgainstRacism leaflets outside the school gates.

The #WhiteRiot documentary is a good reminder how overt #fascism and #racism were in 70s Britain. And the power of grass-root responses.

It's grim to see so much rolled back so fast, but I take some comfort that in my lifetime these right-wing attitudes were defeated, or at least shamed and largely shunned.

  14. '#RockAgainstRacism is reborn as gigs planned in riot towns across Britain [#England & #NI?]

Just as #RAR helped turn the tide on the National Front in 1970s, activists today are planning concerts in this summer’s trouble spots.'
