Tesla's Robovan reminds me of the Mercury streamliner, an art deco locomotive train design from the 1930's.
It's an apt metaphor for Musk's fantasy future, stuck in old science fiction tales. A fantasy of endless resources for personal transportation, endless public money for infrastructure, and where technology will save us all. Ridiculous. Even dangerous.
...But the retro-cool appeal of art deco design never fades.

4) Even the gullwing/bat/whatever doors are going to be a challenge to bring to production. The falconwing doors on the Model X caused all sorts of problems and still don't work well (trust me, I own one!) There are likely other challenging technologies in the #Cybercab and #Robovan that will prove difficult to put into production and bring to market "by 2026”.

2) All of this is predicated on the capabilities of unsupervised "full self driving”, which has been promised and not delivered by #Tesla for over a decade. It doesn't matter when the company can put the #Cybercab and #Robovan into production; the gating factor is having "anytime/anywhere" self-driving working using only cameras. And this has not been proven to be possible. 90% unsupervised sure, but not 100%. Will this ever work?

Let's set aside our feelings about #Elon and #Tesla for a moment and consider some of the oddities of the #Cybercab and #Robovan…
1) "You'll be able to buy one” - This is a really weird business model, potentially shifting liability and cost to "independent owners" similarly to Uber and GrubHub. Musk tells us about being a "shepherd" to a “flock" of Cybercabs rather than being an Uber driver. This is a very on-point admission for him - and we must consider the impact of this shift.

@Powerfromspace1 #robovan looks like it will need re-engineering so it doesnt snow plough curbs and speedbumps. Tesla makes too much on cars to shift to bus and semi production. But it would be great if they did produce these in volume.
