Let’s hope she is comprehensively dealt with in the sealed elements of the Royal Commission - her performance in the witness box was a masterclass in plausible deniability, evasion and deception. No contrition just self protection. A shocker!

“It’s the executive [Ministers & their depts] and legislature [Senate and HoR] that let Australians down...

“The government broke the law. It did so on a grand scale; it knew it was doing so.”

MPs questioned ministers, the Senate questioned department officials. There were “hearings and speeches expressing concern and calling for transparency in both houses of parliament. There was a ‘Fair Debt Recovery’ private members bill and two Senate inquiries...

The Senate ordered officials to hand over legal advice, they were ignored.

The Liberal and National Party MPs and Senators covered for the the government.

“The Westminster system only works when honour and selflessness is present.”

Here’s an argument from #RexPatrick that we need a better model.

  9. Ruptures inside the NSW Liberal Party over Alex Hawke & Scott Morrison. Morrison wasn't on the list of pre-selection seats because it was thought he would have resigned from parliament by now. He's now tipped to dig in over #RobodebtRC, not wishing to appear at fault if he resigns. #auspol theguardian.com/australia-news

  10. Ministers are the political equivalent of a Director.
So, it would seem reasonable that they have the same expectations and obligation to ‘act with care and diligence’.
In fact, this equivalence is reflected in the ‘doctrine of ministerial responsibility’.

But it’s still hard to imagine any concrete form of ‘resolution’

  21. Stuart Robert has gone to ground since his resignation & Qld LNP candidate Cameron Caldwell says he hasn't spoken to him in weeks. Caldwell described the #RobodebtRC as a 'distraction' & being used by others as 'smear'. #FaddenVotes #auspol abc.net.au/news/2023-07-06/fad

  22. The #robodebtRC gives us solid evidence of how the mainstream media colludes with govt to help mislead the public. It is an indictment of a rotten system and I went through the final report to summarise what we learn about the process. It ain't pretty.

"The tragedy and crime that was #Robodebt could not have happened without the collusion of the mainstream media, and it would not have been stopped without the existence of unpaid activists using social media."

Hiding your illegal and unconscionable behaviour behind a claim that you derive power from a sacred institution is a despicable act perpetrated by the worst examples of human beings.

  26. @MrLee it's interesting to reflect on the fact that this occurs primarily bc it's so obviously beneficial to govt. The plausible deniability from media is actually given weight bc this practice is nothing new. There is a long provenance for strategic leaking to favourable outlets - William McMahon was renown as Billy the Leak for eg.

As media consumers it's reassuring to know that evidence for this collision is so damning. That's not to say justifiable or even remotely fair - it's a call to arms for more media plurality and accountability. That's the structural (and moral) issue for me. The so-called 4th estate is self serving generally and willing to be engaged and used by govt (with eyes wide open) for clicks & bucks.

Govt or even regulating platforms to pay for media outlet stories must not be ruled out. Governance & oversight beefed up and defo law reformed. A bill of rights might be nice too

  37. Ex-minister Stuart Robert 'takes responsibility' for Robodebt implementation, admits defending it despite knowing it could be unlawful
    abc.net.au/news/2023-03-02/qld

Looks like Stuart Robert has dropped some of his bluster and retreated to the Nuremberg Defense. He's making weak excuses for being a key architect and implementer of RoboDebt, which led to the death of many people and harmed the physical and mental health of thousands of Australians. This is on Stuart Robert, and he shouldn't be able to dodge accountability by saying he was "Just following orders".

    Key quotes:

Stuart Robert went on television programs defending RoboDebt as a "dutiful cabinet minister", despite being aware it could be unlawful.

"As a senior member of the government, I take absolute responsibility as part of cabinet solidarity for this."

"Ministers are required to defend the government's programs as part of cabinet solidarity regardless of if they agree with them or not."

"I have implemented many things I passionately disagree with, but I'm still required as a minister to represent them and defend them and that's what I've done here, regardless of my personal sense or belief."

    "Legal advice is just advice."
