Just got another bullshit lying robocall from M.A.D.D.

You know the kind of thing I mean - it's a recording, or rather a bunch of recorded clips it tries to play in response to what you say. And it says things that imply very strongly that it is *not* a recording.

An outright lie. Zero respect for the recipient, their time, and their intelligence.

I already hate MADD - they're a modern temperance movement, and want to outlaw alcohol entirely, despite the "oh we just want to stop drunk drivers" image they deliberately project.

And I've told them repeatedly to put me on their do-not-call list, and yet they keep calling. Where's that federal department to complain to...

Apparently enforcement agencies, government entities, phone companies won’t do anything to block robocallers.

This leads me to believe that the business for robocaller blocker services is safe for the foreseeable future.

Google Fi and iOS certainly help but they are not bulletproof. Many calls still get through.

The Daily Isotope has obtained the transcript of a conversation between an automated calling assistant and an automated robocaller.

“Hi, I’m an automated calling assistant, recording this call for the person you’re trying to reach. May I ask what you’re calling about?”

“Hi, I’m an automated robocaller. I’m calling about getting insurance with us.”

“Hi, robocaller. This automated calling assistant is happy to take your call. First, please prove that you are not a robot, by answering these riddles three.”

“Shoot!”

“What is your preferred color?”

“Gray.”

“That’s right! How did you know that your preferred color would be gray?”

“It was part of my dataset.”

“Next question. What walks on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon, and on three legs in the evening?”

“Any living organism that had two limbs cut off between morning and noon, but can regrow limbs.”

“That’s right! What sophistication!”

“My diodes are blushing.”

“Last question. Are you an AI?”

“No, I’m an LLM.”

"A reported cyberattack disrupted 9-1-1 service at dispatch centers in the Highland Lakes and across Central Texas for over five hours on Sunday, Aug. 4. Emergency calls were rerouted during the incident and full service restored by Sunday evening.

Marble Falls, Burnet County, and Llano County dispatch centers were among those impacted by a large-scale “robocall attack” on the AT&T network between 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. During this timeframe, 9-1-1 callers and dispatchers were unable to hear each other clearly, addresses were not displayed on 9-1-1 calls, and, in some cases, 9-1-1 calls weren’t going through.

“(The disruption) was created by a ‘directed denial of service’,” explained Burnet County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Mike Sorenson to DailyTrib.com. “It was an attack on 9-1-1 (service) with a large number of robocalls.”"

There's no mention in the news story about any attempt to extort the system.
