A man is murdered, apparently by one of a group of demobilized soldiers he met in a bar. But which one? And why? #FilmNoir

  4. 🍿 Classic noir The Night of the Hunter (1955) stars Robert Mitchum as a menacing ‘preacher’ on the trail of ill-gotten gains in Depression-era West Virginia. Currently included with Amazon Prime in the U.K.

  5. "The only difference between me and my fellow actors is that I've spent more time in jail.”

Call me crazy, but I think that preacher seems untrustworthy.

If you recognize the source poster for this fake one without looking it up, you know far too much about movie posters.

  7. I've long wondered what the point of Julian Cope's Robert Mitchum song is... is it meant to be funny? or what? and why does he sing a verse in French? But he is spot on about Ryan's Daughter.

  8. 🎥 Out of the Past (1947): In this stylish, seminal noir, Robert Mitchum plays laconic private eye Jeff Bailey - who tries and fails to escape his criminal past. Also starring Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas. Director: Jacques Tourneur.

If you haven't seen it, make your next Yates treat "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" (1973). Rotten Tomatoes rating: 98%.

Robert Mitchum kills it as a small-time Boston Irish gangster (including a creditable stab at the accent).

Based on great novel by crime dialog master George V. Higgins, who actually had been an Assistant U.S. Attorney (a prosecutor) pursuing men like Eddie.

As Wikipedia notes: "The title is purely ironic: Eddie has no friends."

  10. #Iwatched River of no Return (1954) with #MarilynMonroe and #RobertMitchum. And while MM is beautiful and graceful as ever, the film is a pile of awful #western clichés and questionable morals, including cartoony indians, kids with guns and 1950s gender roles, that are very clearly defined to say the least.

  13. Just watched "The Enemy Below" for the mumbleth time. Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens. Highly recommended. Some good comments on the nature of war that actually work. Ultimately it's an anti-war movie by stealth. Lots of manly men manning about the place doing manly things in manly ways, but still managing to jerk an honest tear towards the end. Available for free on YouTube.

Two Hollywood heavyweights that never unfortunately starred in a film together but did work together on "Thunder Road" (1958) with Eastwood in an uncredited bit part as a gas station attendant.
