  1. Nothing like a well-packed Berthoud bag.

Mini-laptop, hardback book and cycling clothes for the longer ride home.

On the train now a little early haven’t travelled this way around in ages. It’ll beat the wind though and I didn’t need to get up so early.

Now to read a little of Ness, by Robert Macfarlane. Introduced to his work by the beautiful record by Hayden Thorpe which was inspired by his reading of it and the obsession with Orford Ness that followed. I sense I may have to ride over there.

  2. Today has so far been sort of a lazy, under the weather loss but I'm feeling a little better at the moment so I'm going to see if I can do a small walk/hike.

It was nice though, I did read and finish "Is a River Alive?" by Robert Macfarlane which I loved loved loved and HIGHLY recommend.

  11. A river may be considered a life form itself. It is what #RobertMacfarlane champions with passion and rigor in Is a River Alive? (public library) — a portal of a #book lucid and luminous, hinged on something particular and urgent (the rights of #nature movement) but (because this is Robert Macfarlane) opening into the deepest recesses of the existential and the timeless: the measure and meaning of being alive.

"Merely to be with the mountain as one visits a friend, with no intention but to be with him."

Fascinating. I admit to not having read "The Living Mountain" and indeed not knowing Nan Shepherd, the writer. This powerful essay by Robert Macfarlane has shown me that this was an inexcusable omission. I will read all of Shepherd's novels, and I must read The Living Mountain.

  17. Riding the iron horse to visit dad; travelling companions - Satie on my headphones, final few dozen pages of Robert MacFarlane's Is A River Alive? flowing past & around me like a highland stream that knows it will become a mighty firth, then the world ocean.

    Beautiful, thoughtful work.

  18. #LunchtimeReading : starting Is a River Alive?, the forthcoming Robert MacFarlane, coming out at the end of April from Penguin.

Robert always conjures a sense of wonder about the natural world, I've so been looking forward to this.

  19. #FinishedReading this remarkable nature writing by #NanShepherd about her walks in the #Cairngorms in Scotland. In the 40s, well before anyone was talking about mindfulness, this book is an ode to minute observation both of the world around you and of its effect on your senses and body. There is a whole chapter on the feeling of falling asleep and waking on a mountain. Read the perceptive foreword by #RobertMacfarlane and avoid the facile afterword by Jeanette Winterson! #Bookstodon @bookstodon

  20. Enjoying my first listen to the #JohnnyFlynn / #RobertMacfarlane albums Lost in the Cedar Wood & The Moon Also Rises. Enjoyed Macfarlane's books so was interested to check them out. Folkie stuff with a bit of a pagan element perhaps - and of course nature themes, as might be expected with Macfarlane's involvement. Fine stuff!
