To celebrate "Johnny Mnemonic" turning 29 years old recently, I'm posting about this classic CyberPunk themed film.

Although interesting, it should be obvious that a thumbnail concealed laser whip that Shinji uses in could pose as much danger to its user as its intended target.

Also the laser whip clearly inspired the monowire in Cyberpunk 2077.

To celebrate "Johnny Mnemonic" turning 29 years old recently, I'm posting about this classic CyberPunk themed film.

One of the most unintentionally (or intentionally) funny scenes is between Johnny and Ralfi. Udo Kier chews up the scene here, it's impossible he didn't see Johnny in the mirror before he looked away. Everyone's acting is completely over the top.

No "Johnny Mnemonic" didn't get the internet right for 2021. But back in 1995 it wasn't out of the realm of the impossible. The movie coins "Nerve Attenuation Syndrome" as a cost of humanity using tech.

What the film did get right is a pharmaceutical corporation fucking over humanity.

To think that a "mnemonic courier" could carry 80 GB of data in his head when the story was written...

I prefer the opening title crawl of the "Extended Cut" or often refereed to as the "Japanese Cut" of "Johnny Mnemonic" over the original.

In the original crawl, "Corporations Rule" is describes corporate greed. In the Extended Cut we get the line "Age of terminal capitalism. The armored towers of multinational corporations rise above the ruins of the democracies that gave them birth."

The opening title crawl of "Johnny Mnemonic" lets you know straight away that this story is steeped in an all too familiar cyberpunk dystopian future.

Front loading the film with this information gets the audiences head in the game immediately.
