Notice and smell the smoky have in Roanoke today?
The smoky air and foggy horizons are being caused by patchy smoke from distant wildfires that has drifted directly into the Mid-Atlantic region.
A few things are coming together to create today's conditions:The Wildfire Smoke Source: Northerly and westerly winds aloft are carrying fine particulate smoke from active wildfires down into Virginia.
Stagnant Air & Sizzling Heat: The arrival of the smoke coincides with a major summer heatwave. Temperatures are climbing to around 95°F. Because the winds at the surface are very light and variable, the air is stagnant. Instead of the smoke blowing through quickly, the heavy, humid air is trapping it right over the valley.
Because of the high concentration of microscopic smoke particles, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Roanoke, Salem, and the surrounding counties.
Health Note: A Code Orange means the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups. If you have asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions—or if you are looking out for children and seniors—it is highly recommended to limit strenuous outdoor activities today.

Fuck CNN normally, but this article does a good job of documenting some of the really nice features that comes from visiting or especially living in Roanoke, VA which they've named one of the 10 best towns in America to visit. While I don't plan to live here my whole life (I yearn for Nova Scotia as my dream place), I have a deep fondness for the area I've spent about 30 of my 34 years (and the other 4 were just a 30 minutes drive down the road). It is a beautiful little valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains and a neat little city that is the deep blue center of the state's most red region.

Got my Democratic primary ballot (I always vote my mail, as my disabled status allows) for city council.
I voted for one person who is a fellow enby who works for an organization dedicated to reducing drug deaths with Naloxone and needle exchanges and the like and a man who is running on fully funding our public schools (the conservadem city council just issued a 14 million dollar cut) and expanding our public transportation which I utilize a lot.
I voted against both active city council members cause they should all be given the boot universally, and also didn't vote for the banker in the race because obviously.

Here in Roanoke, our signature dish is from a hole in the wall dive eatery downtown called the Texas Tavern (ahaven for drunk and hungover people in our biggest nightlife area).
The burger is a "Cheesy Western", it a cheeseburger with fried egg and mustard with onions and chili as optional. A couple different places have it on the menu other than TT, and it is the only times you will see me purposefully order a burger (my stomach doesn't process beef well).
