  1. Roadwarden: Text-Based RPG With Pixel Art ⚔️

Here’s a fancy pants text-based RPG by Moral Anxiety Studio from Wrocław, Poland. It launched on PC in September 2022 and made its way over to Nintendo Switch in August 2025, too.

Think of it as an interactive novel, a bit like choose your own adventure book, where you pick narrative arcs and guide your mysterious loner through Medieval human settlements. All wrapped up with neat pixel art graphics and a moody soundtrack.

We’re on a Roadwarden to Nowhere

During our research for this review, we discovered a new word. Roadwarden belongs in the grimdark subgenre of sci-fi and fantasy fiction. The genre deals with bleak themes with amoral characters and dystopian concepts.

Its mood and style are quite similar to the phenomenal Disco Elysium (2019), one of the best ever indie games. And whilst not as good, this is still a mighty impressive piece of work.

Roadwarden is, essentially, a short story. There’s a lot of reading to do, so it plays out over about 10 hours or so (or longer, if you’re a slow reader, dumbass). And kind of like text-based adventures of yesteryear, players must put narrative options to guide the Roadwarden toward his/her fate.

You’re hired by merchants to protect the lands of a remote peninsula, all with the goal of ensuring the safe passage of trade. We’ll leave off spoilers from here, but it’s fair to say things get increasingly tense and dramatic. Especially as you must manage the RPG elements, your character’s survival, and a 40-day time limit to get the job done.

Here it is in action. Again, an interactive novel, so your best experience of it will be reading/playing it. Not watching it.

So, yeah, as with any book the more time you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it. Its fantasy setting is very well realised, with some great pixel art, and the store and interactive elements are very well managed.

It’s like a more fully realised version of Choice of Robots (2014), the 300,000 word text adventure by Kevin Gold. But… Roadwarden has more pictures! Hurray.

The game also packs in a great little score by composer Nicholas Roder. This plays along whilst you play, really help to immerse you into the story.

These are great guitar-driven pieces and set a fabulous atmosphere. Reading with music? Yes, it can work pretty well.

It’s all less than £10 and provides a neat little, fun, immersive time of it. It’s more complex than just reading, but minimalistic enough to still be a treat to enjoy.

Well worth your time. Plus, when you finish it, you can claim you’ve read a book!

  7. #NintendoSwitch Review Video: #Roadwarden - If you’re into more classic text-based play, this is an outlier that delivers just that and more, but be warned that the interface and some hiccups can be annoying at times #IndieGames...

#jeuJeudi #Roadwarden

  13. Stepping away from the tabletop, #HumbleBundle has a deal for $13 that includes #CitizenSleeper and #DiscoElysium and it's worth it for those two games alone. I adore the first and have only dabbled in the latter but loved it, too.

    It also includes #PillarsOfEternity 1 & 2, #RoadWarden, and #BrokenRoads, but 15% off Citizen Sleeper 2.

Seriously, if you don't mind a lot of reading in your video games, get these.

  15. the game #ROADWARDEN has a "deaf support" setting, which says "the narration describes sounds in greater detail".

I don't think I've ever seen such a setting, seems like a good idea. Seems to be the one of two accessibility features (font is another), not sure if it would need others. I haven't played yet, I go trough the settings before playing most games.

  17. Oh yes, and #RoadWarden is very cheap on steam right now.

I basically only search for games that are under 5 euros there now.

So far I've played 9 hours and I ran out of time in the main quest without feeling like I'd done everything, so I'll give it another playthrough. I think I'll also appreciate the writing more the second time, when I'm less excited to see what comes next.

  19. I've been playing a new game the last few days. It's a pixel art text adventure called #RoadWarden. It reminds me of a good choose your own adventure book.

The main thing that grabbed me was very un-retro, however.

It's the way the game handles gender. It is clearly set in a 'medieval fantasy world' but it's also clearly a *post-gender world*. Not in the way that some games just 'don't see gender'. This is clearly a world in the aftermath of a gender revolution.

  21. July 19, 2023 - Day 200 - NewPlay Review
    Total NewPlays: 220

    Game: Roadwarden

    Platform: Steam
    Release Date: Sep 12, 2022
    Library Date: Jul 18, 2023
    Unplayed: 1d
    Playtime: 23m

The third review for this month's Humble Choice bundle is the fourth game in the bundle, because I wanted something low impact, and Roadwarden looked like it might fit the bill.

Another pixel-art based game, but also a mash-up between an RPG, and adventure game, and interactive fiction?

Roadwarden is set in a fantasy kingdom of some kind, where you find yourself as the newly appointed "roadwarden". Shocking twist, right there.

As far as I can tell, a roadwarden is kind of a jack-of-all-trades who travels between locations in the peninsula, carrying communications, doing odd jobs, killing monsters, and completing the quests the game hands you.

It's all rendered in pixel-art shades of brown, but (thankfully) the pages of text you need to read through a rendered in a clean serif typeface (although you can choose a pixel-font if that suits you).

It hasn't really grabbed me. It was definitely low-impact, but I'm a bit too tired to read through pages and pages of text.

I'll let it sit for a few days, see if it tickles my brain (as some games do), or if I forget about it.

    Roadwarden is:

    3: OK

  25. I don't play a lot of video games, but I'm really delighted to see how games like #wildermyth and #roadwarden show that #rpg games don't have to be generic slaughterfests and can, in fact, be stories about endurance, hope, sacrifice, and humanity. Such great heart in these games.

  26. I wasn't gonna do more fan art of @vicorva, but then I thought "what would I do if I drew them with a #Roadwarden theme" and then the answer was so obvious that I couldn't resist.
