  1. Roadside America

A miniature village created by Laurence Gieringer in 1935 in his home. But with growing interest Geringer purchased land in Shartlesville, Pennsylvania where the display opened to the public in 1953.

In 2020 Roadside America announced that they were closing permanently and auctioning off the display.

My family visited this wonderful site often in the 60s - a great memory from my childhood

  5. @jcrabapple if you’re looking to add offbeat/quirky stops to your trip then roadsideamerica.com can be pretty fun. No Android app, alas, but they do have resources on the website. #roadsideamerica

  6. A friend and I have been talking about going to Zzyzx since before covid and we finally did it. The abandoned resort has been turned into a desert research center under the aegis of Cal State University Fullerton, but the bit outside is stunning blotch of green between desert mountains and a massive salt flat. Definitely worth it if making the drive between LA and Las Vegas, maybe not as a standalone trip.

  7. If you're a Hollywood kid, you can smell this photo. Thanks to photographer Peter Mackertich for the deep fried madeleine, circa 1977-78 judging by gas prices. #signgeeks #roadsideamerica

  9. We heard there was a possibility to see the Northern Lights way up north at the tip of Maine, on the border of Canada.

We didn't see the northern lights that night, all we got was this stupid Milky Way.

  10. This is Cano.
He constructed and lives in a castle made from beer cans and found materials. We went to check it out and Cano invited us in to smoke a joint.
He's fighting for reparations alleging that he is owed half the state of Colorado for his family's sheep that were stolen by US forces in the 20s.
The castle was damaged in a fire a few months ago.
