  2. Tadej Pogacar Shatters Pantani’s 1995 Alpe d’Huez Record by 1:15

I haven't watched the Tour de France since 2016, mainly due to the fact I dropped cable and would need to subscribe to a streaming service that may or may not work with my all-Linux set-up. But I stay abreast of the big stories, as I proved last year with my articles on the superhuman feats of Tadej Pogačar on Hautcam and later on Mont Ventoux. Back when I was following cycling closely from 2009-2016ish, there were certainly questions about some of the performances, but for the most part […]

I published two New Leaf Journal articles in the last few days on spectacular climbing preformances at the 2025 Tour de France, with the first covering Tadej Pogačar nearly breaking Bjarne Riis’ infamous ascent record on Hautacam and the second on Pogačar (along with riders 2-4) shattering Iban Mayo’s (time trial!) ascent record on Mont Ventoux. We had the Queen Stage of the Tour earlier today, which tackled three large mountains, ending with a summit finish on Col de la Loze. But the mountain to watch was the penultimate Col de la Madeleine, which was making its 28th performance in le Tour. In 1998, it featured as one of the climbs on stage 16 where the defending Tour winner Jan Ullrich, who was nearly six minutes behind the maillot jaune, Marco Pantani, launched a savage attack on Col de la Madeleine which he pushed all the way to the finish, with only the yellow jersey able to follow. Mr. Ullrich unsurprisingly holds the ascent record on Col de la Madeleine. Could Messrs. Pogačar and Jonas Vignegaard, with the latter needing to make up nearly five minutes, threaten the record? I quote from Lanterne Rouge’s stage recap:

Vingegaard and Pogačar climbed Madeleine in 54:38 with 6.02–6.03 ᵉW/kg … Jan Ullrich’s 1998 Madeleine record was 52:44 with 6.47 ᵉW/kg. It was one of the most impressive long climbing performances and would not have been broken even if Vingegaard and Pogačar had gone full gas up the climb after Glandon, which was already taxing.

Messrs. Vingegaard and Pogačar were very fast, but they were nearly two minutes slower than the Ullrich-Pantani duo in 1998. Let this be a reminder that while Mr. Pogačar has established some new standards with his best performances in 2024 and 2025, the top climbers of the 90s were very fast. Mr. Pogačar has taught us to say never say never when it comes to the fastest climbing performances (all obvious questions aside), but Mr. Ullrich’s record on Col de la Madeleine would be imposing even if the mountain were used as a summit finish, much less as the penultimate climb on a mountainous stage.

  4. Ventoux Too: Pogačar’s New TDF Climbing Record

    thenewleafjournal.com/ventoux-

Just days after Tadej Pogačar nearly broke the ascent record on Hautacam, he and rival Jonas Vingegaard demolished a long-standing record on Mont Ventoux.

I just published an article about the Hautacam climb at the Tour de France. The Tour has visited Hautacam seven times: 1994, 1996, 2000, 2008, 2014, 2022, and 2025. I wanted to include stage profiles for every Hautacam visit to put the climb in each Tour in the context of the stage it was a part of. While I had no trouble finding 2008-25, I had to use the Wayback Machine for 2000 and I could not find readily available profiles for 1994 and 1996. Someone needs to collect old Tour de France stage profiles in one place.

(Note: I am sure I could have found 1994 and 1996 if I kept digging, but I decided to cut my losses. Hence my desire for a more-easily searchable collection of stage profiles.)

  6. Pogačar Chases Riis on Hautacam

    thenewleafjournal.com/pogacar-

Tadej Pogačar won stage 12 of the Tour de France with an attack on Hautacam and climbed the imposing mountain just 30 seconds slower than Bjarne Riis in 1996.

  8. Cycling Doping Fallacies

    thenewleafjournal.com/cycling-

Addressing an interesting argument that because Lance Armstrong was the best stage racing cyclist in a largely doped field, he would have been the best clean cyclist in a clean field.
