  1. Looks like some #riyadhcomedyfestival performers are going with "anybody complaining is lumping in the people there with the government".

Bullshit. They were invited and paid by the government under strict topic rules. It would be like being invited by Trump or Biden, paid by the government and told that to get the money, you couldn't criticize them. It doesn't matter who else is in the room. You can't say your comedy is about truth telling etc after taking that gig, esp for a dictator.

  3. Aziz Ansari says he plans to donate "part of the fee" for performing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival to Human Rights Watch, but the organization doesn't want it. Arvind Ganesan, the HRW's head of economic justice and rights division, told @Variety that accepting money from Riyadh performers, "could create the perception that somehow we compromised our independence after the fact." Here's more.

  7. "If there’s anything ironic about being so scared of telling the wrong joke that you run straight into the arms of the House of Saud, it seems lost on the festival performers...

"Should #comedians be held to a higher standard than footballers? It would help if they weren’t so fond of touting their own importance, their skewering of the ruling class, their ‘speaking truth to power’."
