  1. Iron Arhat (Tue Luo Han) is always one of my favorite rock teas. This is a very nice (2022) example from Rivers and Lakes Tea.

  2. White Rooster Crest is usually processed as a low oxidation, low roast rock tea. Almost more like a green tea than an Oolong. Subtly flavored, it is a rock tea varietal I struggle to appreciate.

  3. Moving my traditional winter rock tea fiesta up a bit this year, from starting after Thanksgiving to starting after Halloween. Golden Water Turtle (Shui Jin Gui) rock tea from Rivers and Lakes.

  4. Zhangping Shui Xian (Roasted) from Rivers and Lakes tea. This version is tasty too, but as a small matter of preference, this morning I feel I prefered the previous unroasted version.

  5. For the most part oolong tea isn't sold in compressed form. The only real exception is Zhangping Shui Xian from Southern Fujian. It is often sold in these cute little tile shaped pillows. This is a very nice example from Rivers and Lakes tea.

  6. Opening a 2023 Meng Ding (Sichuan) Mao Feng from Rivers and Lakes. Clean, a bit herbal, sweet aftertaste.

  7. In general, White Rooster Crest is just not my favorite kind of Rock Tea. In processing style it is almost more like a white or green tea than other rock teas, very low oxidation. This Rivers and Lakes version also has a very low roast. I can appreciate the choices, and it isn't bad tea, but it isn't my jam.

  8. If you like Anxi Oolong or Taiwanese Oolong, but haven't tried rock tea, this 2023 "Light Fire" Da Hong Pao from Rivers and Lakes Tea is a good bridge to appreciating Wuyi Rock Oolongs. Has rock character, but the light fire preserves a more typical oolong perfume.

  9. A rather nice Iron Arhat, the closest to traditional or classic rock tea so far from the 2023 Rivers and Lakes rock tea releases.

  10. "Big Red Robe (Light Fire)" from Rivers and Lakes Teas. "Light fire" means high fragrance, this Da Hong Pao almost tastes more like a tie guan yin.

  11. Another take on Iron Arhat Rock Oolong, this one (2023) from Rivers and Lakes Tea. While it isn't as exceptional as the version from Tong Xin She, it is very good (and quite a bit cheaper). Good traditional rock tea flavor, but lacks a bit in depth of character and impression of longevity.

  12. Casting about for teas to drink last night, I ran across a small amount of this 2022 Meng Ding Huang Ya Yellow tea from Rivers and Lakes Tea. After yesterday's intense puerh experience, seemed like a nice change of pace.

Yellow teas are typically bud only pick, similar to early spring green tea. The difference is in production, where green teas are dried immediately after kill green, yellow teas are allowed to oxidize a bit in enclosed bags before being dried. They have a richer mellower flavor than similar green teas.

  13. Final full dose of 2022, slightly vintage, Meng Ding GanLu green tea from Rivers and Lakes Tea. Another good company with US based shipping. Smaller tea inventory, but no bad teas.

  14. Back on the green train, getting near the bottom of this bag of Meng Ding GanLu from Rivers and Lakes Tea. (Still breaking the rules, making Chinese green tea in a Japanese pot (kyusu).)

  15. Some more slightly vintage tea to drink, 2022 Meng Ding GanLu green tea from Rivers and Lakes Tea.

  16. Can't win 'em all with vacation weather, but at least I have my sweetie and a big mug of Meng Ding Mao Feng from Rivers and Lakes Tea (and a bowl of oatmeal).

  17. Going through my tea boxes I found a small packet of Meng Ding Huang Ya, aka Misty Peak Yellow Tips, from Rivers and Lakes Tea. With all the talk of yellow tea recently, thought it would be good to review. As you can see, the pick standard and finishing shape is quite different from the Taiwanese yellow I tried a few weeks ago. Similar flavor/scent to the nutty chestnut-like character of dragonwell, but with touch more sweetness.

  18. The only controversial thing about this 2013 Aged Shan Lin Xi Taiwan red tea from Rivers and Lakes Tea is that I'm almost out.
